Election Day

Election Day

Super excited to vote today. Really love the whole process of going to vote–popping down the road whenever I get a free moment, going in, finding my name in the book and signing next to it, wrestling with the huge big piece of paper and then trying to shove it the right way into the machine. Smiling happily to the ladies who sit there, election after election. It seems we are slowly growing old together, me and them, year after year. It's just So Exciting. Makes me want to run for office or something.

I mean, not really. Really don't want to do that. Don't have time, for one thing, and really dislike being hated by other people, which seems like some sort of prerequisite in our current political system. The whole enterprise is driven forward by the wild and general abuse of one for another. “I hate that guy!” I'm allowed to say, swinging my wooden spoon and sloshing my modicum of evening wine. “Can you believe what they all did!” I sparkle and freak out. And Matt walks away because he doesn't care any more. It's all careening along in a large hand basket and he's become bored.

But not me. Not yet. The peaceful change from one set of people to another, the game of power and corruption, the thrill of trying really hard to chuck someone out and put in someone who turns out to be just as wretched, I love it all. And, I've gathered a little hot sausage and some mushrooms and Brussels sprouts, and a huge pizza for the children, and I'm going to make them sit there tonight and watch election returns, and enjoy the crying and complaining. I have a variety of civics lectures tucked away in the back of my mind for such a time as this. It's going to be wonderful, like Christmas and Halloween all rolled into one.

Go Vote!
