Well nigh now over a year ago, Matt began preaching through I Corinthians. He had hemmed and hawed for many weeks, as we were closing in on the end of Mark, trying to make up his mind about where to go next. I kept saying I Corinthians. Maybe I’m crazy but I like the strident astringency of Paul’s horror as he writes to this church. It’s like he can’t believe what he’s hearing, and the words just fall out of... Read more

Can’t believe it’s already Monday. The inexorable march of time, or something. Monday means Aldi and then a stack of math homework where I sit next to Elphine so that she doesn’t spook. I don’t have to do anything, I just have to sit there. If I was a different kind of person I would try to believe something special about me just sitting there. But really, I’m just gonna sit there, and I’m probably going to just surf the... Read more

One Binghamton made national news!…for it’s terrible health care. Actually, this was a huge surprise to me. I saw the headline at the beginning of the week and didn’t bother with it. But then I kept seeing it so I looked and there we are, number one in the nation for the worst place to get sick. Somehow, I don’t agree. First of all, numbers are weird and incomprehensible and who knows how it is that they are measuring one... Read more

I happened to look at the calendar yesterday and discovered that we’ve been toiling away now, on school, for just slightly longer than an entire month. Every morning I think we are still ‘easing in’ but I think I should count in my mind that on some level we are already there. The last piece of the fall return was hiking all the way out to Endicott to resume fencing. I try not to have small black feelings about Endicott,... Read more

I’ve been trying to work up some excitement for the visit of the Pope this week. I don’t have that much time to read the news every evening before crashing into sleep. Whatever has come across my feed I have tried to digest but have mostly just immediately closed my eyes in slumber. That actually goes for all the news this last month. I know there’s lots going on but I just don’t have what it takes to get worked... Read more

Every morning, round about the time that I begin to type little nothings like this, I hear the tiny ding of my inbox and click over to see what has come in. 6:38, every morning, delivered precisely on time, an email reviewing the newest and best curriculum available right now. One day it will be a couple of math curricula, the next day grammar, and certainly sometimes art and music. For any subject that you could ever desire to bring... Read more

It’s hard for me to think clearly with the gray morning sky pressing in and clouding out all happiness. It seems truly to be the fall. Leaves are really changing, although I can see that they are not as bright and clear as I always pray they will be. I know I should be praying for the world, for an end to all suffering or something, but in autumn, I cannot push aside an obsessive preoccupation with the color of... Read more

I didn’t watch the debate but I was forced to endure a couple of clips after, when I was trying to read an actual book, and Matt was wandering around on Twitter. I say a couple but I mean three–the one of Carly Fiorina ravaging planned parenthood, the one of Carly Fiorina indicating we all perfectly well understood Trump about her face, and the one of  Trump calling her beautiful. I expect he was trying be gallant, kind, as it were,... Read more

So, who won the debate? I didn’t watch it because I don’t have a tv that is ever free of mimecraft for more than thirty seconds, and more importantly, the will to care. As in, I lack the will to stay up and watch many hours of debate when I have concluded none of it matters anyway. I’m tired of getting my hopes up about politics. Or anything really. Like the Archbishop of Canterbury. Maybe he will save the communion.... Read more

I guess a new planned parenthood video came out yesterday, to little or no outcry. So maybe it’s not that big a deal, what’s going on. Maybe the few who are fussing should take their outrage elsewhere. I don’t know what to think about this phenomenon. Ten videos are released of adult people talking in detail about the dismembering of live infants, both inside and outside of the womb, and not only is the outrage Not Enough to bring about... Read more
