Family movie night, which has lately and unfortunately been occurring more than once a week, not sure how, other than through a grave parenting deficiency, or some other personal failing, is growing only in difficulty and weirdness. The trouble, as of course you can imagine, comes when the parents discover they’ve had enough of every Disney, animated, kid approved piece of cinematic tripe and start looking for movies they can bear. And from thence the trouble easily grows when the... Read more

Part of the Anglican order of service, oh whatever, we don’t say that, we say liturgy, part of Anglican liturgy includes the opportunity to confess your sins, in words provided for you by several hundred years worth of language not your own. It happens every week, whether you like it or not, whether you decide to mouth or to actually pray, whether you feel sorry or only know that you should feel sorry.   Speaking of confession, just to momentarily... Read more

Matt sent me a ton of interesting links this week, I guess to wake me up every morning. Heaven forbid I continue on in a complacent stupor of quietness and peace. The Bad Link Some young lady over at the Huffington Post thinks she knows why Josh Duggar cheated on his wife. If you can make it through the whole article, reward yourself with a tater tot. She does have hints of reality dawning on her–it is ridiculous to expect... Read more

Ah, the gentle early morning sound of children fighting and hitting each other with their wicked fists. That’s in the bible somewhere but it’s way beyond me to find it right this second. Every morning I awake to the kicking and squabbling of two little girls battling it out over who gets to be next to me while I toil away at this immortal prose. Though my eyes are supposed to be open at five, and my fingers typing by... Read more

So yesterday I noticed, and how could I not, that the Jesus in Sarah Young’ Jesus Calling sounds awfully like a modern day devotional writer. As I toiled through the book in the afternoon, I began to wish that the Jesus had read more and better older books. If only this Jesus could have dipped into some Shakespeare, I wished, or even something simpler but really lovely, like Mrs. Miniver. If not beauty, then maybe he could have been persuaded... Read more

Today I might walk perilously up close to the line of offending everybody. And me not that confrontational of a person, well, really, not confrontational at all, but really more aggressive in the passive sense of the word. I’m so thankful for the Internet which allows me the wide open space to whack at people in a general way without ever having to meet them personally. You know, in a gentle  way that “raises the tone” and “takes the feelings... Read more

Of course we’re all really interested and appalled about the Dugger Downfall on Ashley Madison, and ready to protest Planned Parenthood, and wondering about the theology of Tullian, and about the terribleness of humanity in general, and I, for one, was all in a froth about the stock market (that’s just a little joke, I barely even know what the stock market is for), but really, all that fades away when you turn your eyes and thoughts to the question... Read more

Spent the weekend thinking about the consequences of bad theology. Theology matters and there isn’t anything anyone can do about it. If you believe something stupid and untrue about God and humanity, it’s going to affect the way you live. You may believe yourself to be above the baseness of irrationality, but if you believe something dumb, you’re going to end up acting in accordance with that belief. I’ll use myself as an example, because I am prone to... Read more

I’m about to cross over the line from thirty-eight to thirty-nine. I managed to go along thinking for a whole year that I was going to be turning thirty-eight, not that I was already there. It was a tragic moment to discover I’d practically lost a whole year, as it were. I mean, I did live through it, so not totally lost, but I lived through it without paying attention. As anyone who has read any number of years of... Read more

Depending on who you are, yesterday could have been like Christmas for the Internet. I mean, if you’re an attorney, or someone who loves loves loves seeing the downfall of humanity, I imagine yesterday was a dream come true. For the rest of us…well, for me anyway, the intersection point between another planned parenthood video and the release of all the names and information of everybody availing themselves of the services of Ashley Madison was super depressing. The anti Christmas... Read more
