I know, I know, you’re all frothing to hear how my first day of school went–to scroll through the darling first day of school pictures, to relish the blow by blow of each clever thing breathed out by the delicate lips of my lovely and charming children, to gaze in wonder at the extravagant first day of school breakfast, the hearty life giving luncheon, to marvel at the wonder of a single child learning something, anything. Yeah, well, tough. Didn’t... Read more

About a year ago, well, maybe more of a year and a half, in some kind of fit, I decided to try to blog every day. This was a foolish decision because I have six kids and I’m supposed to be homeschooling them, and I have a big pile of stuff I’m supposed to be doing at church. But, I thought to myself, maybe I could just force myself to blog every day. What’s the worst that could happen? Of... Read more

I know I said I was going to write about my school plans for this year, and also it’s Friday, so there ought to be quick takes, but then, this came across my screen this morning and I just can’t deal. I’ll put up my school stuff tomorrow as learning notes, and have a brief holiday from quick takes, because I won’t be able to get through the day if I don’t take a couple whacks at this insanity. So,... Read more

Apparently we’re falling falling falling to the summer plague. Discovered in alarm yesterday that the three little girls had spent the whole morning playing nicely together on the couch in the school room. Then found them lying around in various other locations, whining. And Romulus was up during the night with a headache, and everyone is still asleep now, even though it’s 8 o’clock. I can imagine no other explanation than that everyone is getting some terrible cold. Of course... Read more

This morning, along with the tea, Matt sent a little something to roil me out of my complacent sleep, maybe as a sicko anniversary present. It looks like it’s a couple months old so probably everyone has already reacted, either in shock or in joy, although I expect more joy. Clever young lady–she doesn’t want to have any children, ever, because she’s crafted such a beautiful life for herself, and so she’s had her tubes tied, in her twenties, but... Read more

It’s good that it’s probably going to rain today because I can’t be dithering around any more. Today, and indeed all week, is the true moment when the rubber, you know, of a tire, hits the road. As in, I do lots and lots of stuff and get our lives together because next week we’re gonna start school. And don’t go asking how I’m gonna start school when I haven’t even done my plan for the year. I’m gonna do... Read more

One Elphine is super mad because she didn’t wake up at six in the morning. She is planning to make crepes for breakfast and thought she would wake up before even the sun, for some reason that I am having trouble understanding. Told her to make them anyway. Gosh. Two Matt sent me this little strange piece about an atheist, in Canada, who fancies herself a minister, and who won’t leave her church even though everyone’s mad she doesn’t, you... Read more

VBS is carrying along beautifully, as far as I can tell. All I have had to do is keep my children out of the church until 5:45 and then wander in behind them to sit at a nice long table and hand out name tags to frantically excited children. Its the dream job, for me. Then I get out all my papers and pretend to work, but really, I talk to people as they happen by, which is lots more... Read more

As the exposing of baby killing has unfolded over the last few weeks I’m surprised to find a sudden convergence of various threads, that I thought were unrelated to each other, suddenly twisting themselves together in my own thinking. Many of us, well, maybe I won’t begin there. I, me myself, have long long been horrified by the knowledge that the ordinary mother, the woman who happens to become pregnant, in this country, has the right to do away with... Read more

So, we saw the Binghamton movie! An actual movie, sitting in our own living room, eating peppers from our own garden stuffed with chorizo and cheese and egg. Should have taken a picture. I think it must be that we don't watch movies because we are always shoved out by the children, who get, on Friday evenings, to be on every conceivable electronic device as long as they don't speak to us for two hours. How we separated them from... Read more
