Holy Week is coming up, as I noted yesterday, and you may be beginning to plan and think about how best to celebrate the week. Or, you may be feaking out and feeling tired. Or you may not even know what I am talking about. In the spirit of getting my own life in order. Here are Five Things About Holy Week. One I plan my whole year around this week so we can have it off from school. It’s... Read more

I'm right on the edge of renaming this blog Oh Look it's Snowing. That way I won't have to begin each new day prying my eyes open and saying, with all due sincerity, Oh Look, What a Shock, It's Snowing. All of us will just know that that's the new order of the world, the New Normal. My weather app actually says that it's not snowing, that it's just cloudy. So that's funny. I mean, of course it's snowing. It's... Read more

It’s Friday! And officially spring! Today or Tomorrow. Not that a day either way will make any difference whatsoever. Although, I should not complain. The garage is now too warm to keep any food in. Have had to rearrange the fridge to make room for pots of all sizes. It’s so convenient to make a big pot of soup and then keep slinging it into the garage day after day until it is finally all eaten. I mean, bringing it... Read more

So last week I ran across this very popular post on what looks to be a very propular blog, and, making a valiant effort to ignore the “Love Wins” sign off at the end of every post, I settled in and read it and walked away thinking, “that's clever”. It's like an obvious truism. It's not about the shape of your body, it's what you do with it. Of course. Then I read a couple of posts about how healing... Read more

Oh look! It’s snowing! Isn’t it pretty, all the gentle fluffy flakes swirling round and round. I think snow in the northeast this year must be like violence in the Old Testament–Unavoidable, Not Particularly Enjoyable After A Certain Point, Hard To See What The Purpose Of It Is. Anyway, I had something clever I wanted to blog about but it would mean me going to dig up some article somewhere, and I’m too demoralized by the snow to actually go... Read more

So I slept late, thinking it was still night when I finally pried my eyes open, what with the incredibly thick cloud cover, and then I shuffled to Bible Study and talked, or rather “participated” too much, what with being not really awake, and now I’m back, pretending that the day is off to a rollicking good start by not making any eye contact with the children. Its going to be one of Those Days, if you know what I... Read more

Ah, the gentle sound of the baby, or whatever she's called, screaming because her bowl of sugar cereal has not been placed in the correct location on the kitchen table. What a tyrant. It sounds like everyone is just staring at her while she screams and screams. Whereas I, I remain up here, far away from the kitchen, with the window open because it's like 100 degrees outside. By 100 degrees I mean 40. There's a bird squawking, I mean... Read more

One Elphine has decided we're definitly going ice skating one more time, wretched girl. She's been up for an hour running all the snow stuff through the washer and dryer and getting clothes set out for everyone. I won't lie, I was really praying she would get tired or sick and not feel like going. I should never have admitted to her that I was thinking of it. She's turning out to be a force to be reckoned with. Humph.... Read more

In Part One we considered the fact that Jonah was perishing. He had been chucked out of the boat, not by accident, but because he had completely disobeyed God, and he was going to drown and then God rescued him by causing a big fish to come swallow him. It was from the belly of the fish that he prayed this prayer. He cried out, saying, “I called out to the LORD, out of my distress, and he answered me;... Read more

My greatest failure, in the execution of Tapas Tueaday, was in not buying enough ground lamb. Well, and then forgetting the flamenco eggs. And then in making the children clean the kitchen. But these turned out to be small sadnesses in the general glow of eating a lot of really delicious food in the middle of the week when none of us really deserved it. On Monday, after checking out Price Chopper for the first time and realizing that the... Read more
