Have had it in my mind for some many days to make peanut sauce. It should be a simple, straightforward task. Walk into the kitchen, as it were, cut up an onion, put things in a pot, cook them, you know. So I thought I would do that, some days ago, because dinner time arrives at regular intervals. It seemed like a reasonable idea. But then I didn't sleep on Monday night, because of some nefarious attack of the devil... Read more

I don't like to get into politics here much, or at all. I don't think anyone is reading this blog because they want to know who I voted for or what I think about what the Broome County Legislature. As the powers of the world strive and struggle and administer their will over us all, I try always to keep my eyes fixed both up at Jesus and down at the daily ordinariness of breakfasts and spelling tests and laundry,... Read more

Oh Look! It's snowing! I blame Matt. He, for real, or as Marigold likes to say, Literally, sat in the comfort of his own living room last night and sabotaged us all. “Isn't it great,” he said like someone who is out to get me (we're doing similes, in school, and I've been amusing myself thinking of terrible ones), “how there hasn't been nearly as much snow as last year?” he said. And now look. I blame him. I really... Read more

Scenes of the Week Did get back into school this week as planned. It’s always hard to start back but it’s better than not starting or everyone begins to drive me crazy. I am never able to add all the subjects back at once. We usually manage Math, Spelling and other basics first and then gradually add others. Next week we should be back to our full schedule. Monday Got to the store in the morning. Can’t remember anything else.... Read more

It is snowing, and you all know how I love snow, and is bitterly cold, and so to cheer myself up I thought I'd spare no effort to enumerate seven good things about this windswept wasteland. The Internet loves lists, as indeed do I. We expect that lists of information and tasks will change our lives, so here goes. Seven Pretty Good Things About Binghamton One-The People Every time I mentally pack up the house and move to Brazil (or... Read more

My life is fairly governed by lists. If I don't write something down on a little scrap of paper, and occasionally I don't, then I don't end up attending to it and it feels as though the world has come undone. So there's the list of things to do for church, the list of things to buy for Sunday School, the list of things to do for School, the list of people to call and emails to write, the list... Read more

Tree’s still up. Shedding needles everywhere. Sparkling in its dry crispy death. Children all horrifically relieved praying it will stay there until next Christmas. Told them all to be quiet and go play. Anyway, it was a choice between taking the wretched thing down or making my 8 o’clock bedtime and the second won out. I was in bed by 8:30, nose in the Internet, drinking a boring glass of water, ignoring the masses. This might seem extreme, to try... Read more

Happy Epiphany! I trust you all have survived the holiday rush and are ready for the long cold slog of January, February and March. Almost bought a big red heart of candy to console myself as the polar winds began to rush in yesterday. Feel certain we, or at least people we know, will freeze to death, or maybe it will just be our hearts. I took a little unannounced blog break, you might have noticed, to grapple with the... Read more

So this is the second Sunday of Christmas. I hope you are eking out every last moment of celebration and Joy, that you haven’t taken your trees down or started eating sensibly yet. This morning we’re in another well worn text. Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the King behold wise men came from the east… Herod the King here is Herod the Great and he’s in the very last years of... Read more

The children stayed up to ring in the new year while Matt and I went to bed at 10:00 pm. Fell asleep looking at other people on facebook celebrating the new year. How lame are we, we said to each other. Pretty lame. Still, it's amazing to leave a living room full of awake children watching something or other on the beautiful TV and not worry about them. What are they going to do? Jump off the couch? That would... Read more
