Those of you who go to Good Shepherd or are on the email list probably got a note, as you did last April, that Matt’s phone had been stolen during church. For the second time now, during the service, someone has rummaged around in the sacriaty and made off with Matt’s phone. And then wiped it clean and sold it. We definitely know this now because yesterday afternoon Elphine and Alouicious and I, as we were wandering around the wilds of... Read more

There, posted the lost post of last week. Now on to this week. Which includes another birthday, sob, and vestry and everything. And a gray sky, forecast for the whole week. But rather than rambling on about any of that, I thought I’d triumph, publicly, over some small ground I’ve won, as a parent, in the last few months. Like so many in this capacious American landscape, we play a losing game on the field of electronic everything–iPods, Xbox, Netflix,... Read more

I tried to post this last week when all my technology was confounding me. In defiance of everything I'm posting it now, late, and not linking to anything, and writing about the weekend in a new post, {Pretty} My walk is so glorious, the clouds so delicate, the sky so clear, the leaves so perfect. I have a hard time knowing which direction to look as I drag my lazy dog behind me up the hill. I love these fat... Read more

9/29-10/3 Gone to Texas. Children did school with K who also fed, bathed and corralled them. Glancing over everything, it seems that they made actual progress. Carry over from the week previous which I also didn’t write about, Gladys took it into her mind to write a “paragraph” and produced and illustrated the following grouping of sentences. Didn’t like to tell her she was plagiarizing. She looked up all the words for spelling herself and somehow, bizarrely, capitalized and punctuated... Read more

I wrote a nice long blog post with pictures yesterday, about Matt's birthday, and the beautiful tree on my walk and this and that, and then it wouldn't post. Anyway which way I tried, all the technology resisted me, Completely. So, faced with the clock ticking at me and reality piling up, I walked away from it. I shut the lid on my technology, got in the shower and didn't look at it again all day. And, I have to... Read more

It might be the result of age and wisdom, cough, but lately I've been frustrated about how little time there is between the time I prie open my eyes in the dawn and when they fall inexorably shut in the night. It's not that we're signed up for too many activities or that we're trying to do too much in too little time. It's not the various interruptions that throw me off course. It's not even really the modern problem... Read more

Today is Matt's Birthday. He's so so so much older than me, five whole years. He's turning gray. Well, so am I, but in a numerically lesser amount even though mine show up bright against my dark hair. For his birthday I'm going to let him shave his beard, much as I love it, because he hates it so much. He has ruined and destroyed the delicate balance of points that we hold so carefully between us by replacing my... Read more

Slept till nine o'clock, shockingly, which means that I have missed the gray cloudy mist that generally characterizes Monday morning. Instead I'm looking up at a blaze of autumn glory, pale blue sky, and fluffy white clouds. It feels sort of apocalyptic. Why did I sleep till nine? you ask. Because I stayed up till midnight reading Stillwater while Matt fell asleep watching football. The patriots, I guess. Around midnight wandered in to find the kitchen a disaster so shoved... Read more

One I'm not emotionally organized enough to be a person who takes blogging breaks “on purpose”. They're the sort or eventualities that happen to me, unplanned. In this case, we suddenly made the decision to go away, not where we originally ought to have gone, to the CANA clergy retreat in Florida, but instead to see Matt's grandmother who has lately been ill and who is more and more confused, dwelling fixedly and unhappily in The Kingdom of Anxiety, where... Read more

One Our front tree is turning out to be so rich and vibrant this year. None of the dull brown and yellow of last year, but bright piercing red. Relieved. Totally and completely relieved. Two Got this in the mail this week from my mother by way of my aunt. She, my mother, got it in Germany and, I gather, lugged it to Mali and then to Italy where she passed it off to my aunt before going back to... Read more
