Many of you know that a group on Harvard’s campus was planning to hold a Satanic “black mass” last night. The event was thankfully called off due to outcry from many Catholics inside and outside of Harvard circles.
I too was upset, but not entirely shocked, when I heard about this event. But today, looking back on how everything transpired, I see the grace that surrounded all that happened and I understand even more St. Paul’s words: “Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” (Rm 5:20).
Here are five blessings that I saw come out of this planned event:
- Drew Faust, the president of Harvard spoke out publicly against the event and attended an hour of Eucharistic adoration in affirmation of her respect for Catholicism. Seriously, one week ago, who would have thunk it?
- A LOT of people are praying now for Lucien Greaves, the head of the Satanic Temple and boy does this man really need our prayers…
- In a diocese that is still reeling from the abuse crisis and full of hurt, this event led people of faith to unite. Not many other things would have unearthed Boston’s deep Catholic roots like this.
- Spiritual warfare is real. Satan is real. And events like this remind all of us this is true in a world where even the Satanists don’t believe he actually exists.
