THE Hipster Saint Immortalized in Film #MediaApostle April 17, 2015

released (1)I did not join the Daughters of St. Paul because our founder is a hipster (in the best sense of the word).

But I have to be honest, Blessed James Alberione was definitely a big factor in my joining this particular congregation.

Nicknamed “Matchstick” by his playmates because of his fiery temper, this guy was kicked out of seminary before going on to found not one, not two, but TEN religious congregations, the Daughters of St. Paul being just one of them.

Alberione was truly a person ablaze. With the help of God, like St. Paul, Alberione learned to put his energy and prophetic vision at the disposal of the Church.

Way ahead of his time, Alberione insisted that the Church needed to move away from censorship and instead enter the media world.

He once said:

We need to put down the scissors of censorship and pick up the camera and microphone. We need to speak in the language of our own time… because God is so beautiful.

Sr. Helena Raphael Burns, who is similarly full of energy and passion for the Word, has spearheaded the making of a film about this holy man with the help of Spirit Juice Studios. I have seen the film and it captures the essence of this complicated, intriguing saint with the beauty and professionalism that Blessed James Alberione would have demanded. If you love media, eccentric people, saints, and/or well-made films, you need to check Media Apostle out.

You can buy this film on DVD but you can also stream it for only $3.99. Now that is a good deal:

If you are interested in a shorter 50 minute version for group viewing, you can also stream from here.

Blessed James Alberione, pray for us!
