Quis ut Deus?
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
Matthew 5:4
This verse has been my favorite Bible verse ever since I began my faith journey a few years ago. It serves as a simple but powerful reminder that no matter how much grief we have in our lives and in our hearts, there is no sorrow that God can’t overcome.
I’ve needed this verse several times in my life, especially in my junior year of high school, when I lost a dearly beloved neighbor to a debilitating motor-neuron disease, our family cat whose old age finally caught up with her, and later that summer, a grandmotherly churchwoman who lost her battle with cancer.
I need it once more, after learning that one of my managers from my on-campus job at Kent State suddenly passed away a few days ago, leaving us all heartbroken.
No matter how deep my sorrow is during these times, I always have God lifting me up throughout all of it, and I’ve learned to keep Matthew 5:4 close to my heart.
This verse’s theme is echoed by Psalm 34:18, which says:
“God is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
We are not alone when we grieve, or when we feel as if we’re drowning in loneliness. When sorrow overwhelms us, God is always there to be the ultimate shoulder to lean on, and we must never forget that.
