My very dear friend, Kara, will be induced tomorrow with her ninth baby. Lucy is the girl her mom waited for patiently – two daughters, and then six boys in a row, before she once again will have a little bit of pink. It is a day that she has looked forward to with a complex mixture of anticipation and fear.
You see, Lucy will be born sick. She has a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. The hole in her diaphragm has allowed some of her organs to slip up into her chest. No one knows how much lung she actually has, and won’t know until she has surgery to put things back in place. What is known is that her stomach and intestines currently sit where her left lung is supposed to be, and her heart has been pushed over to the right side of her chest There is no way of predicting Lucy’s prognosis, and whether or not she will ever get to come home.
While the road ahead of them certainly will be long and difficult, her family continues to be an inspiring example of faithful submission to the will of God. Even as their lives are in turmoil, I am in awe of the strength of Lucy’s parents who cling steadfastly to the foot of the Cross.
I asked my friend what I could do to help, since I am so far away, and she said to ask you all for prayers for Lucy. Pray for her strength. Pray for her healing. Please just pray for their beloved little girl.

For those of you who are not Catholic, we ask that you please join us tomorrow in praying for Lucy and her family.
For our Catholic brothers and sisters, please take a moment to say Mother Teresa’s Express Novena. It is nine Memorares in a row for a special emergency intention, and then one more for thanksgiving. In case you don’t know it by heart (like some of us…not mentioning my own name here…), here it is:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
Thank you.
