Friends are Facebook Friends Forever…..maybe not

I had several Facebook friend adds today and, knowing already what my current amount of friends was, mentally added it up. Just so you know, I don’t think any certain number of Facebook friends makes anyone better than anyone else or is any kind of status symbol. I do think it’s cool to have a list of so many folks you’ve come in contact with through the years or made contact recently. Plus I tell my wife so she can believe I’m pretty much the coolest person to ever walk the planet.

When I clicked to add the new friends, I checked the amount and noticed it had stayed the same. That means as I was letting new friends in the front door, some old ones were excusing themselves out the back. On Twitter, there’s a Qwitter application that will tell you exactly which follower has left the room and which post made them leave, but it’s not very helpful, since it seems pretty random. On Facebook, ignorance seems to be bliss. It’s like being at a party and all of a sudden going ‘I thought I saw Joe here somewhere.’

By chance, I checked one particular friend who I noticed in their info was on the opposite spectrum of where I’m coming from spiritually and socially. I doubt we were ever too much on the same road but for sure our paths are miles apart now. Still, even in our differences, I wonder what could possibly have been said to cut that line? I’ve always enjoyed the fact that I don’t let ideological differences detract from relationships. And I frequently vote for those I don’t agree with – “guilty!!” Just kidding.

I realize the irony of this post coming right after the people pleaser post. Me saying just last night I need to be caught up in what others think. And perhaps the two posts are connected. Regardless, I meant everything I said. And if you come back, I promise to be a good boy. 🙂
