One of the things I thought would happen when I came down here to Florida is that I’d be a little more out of the loop when it comes to the music scene. Someone told me “we don’t get many concerts here in Orlando.” But I would definitely say they probably get more than Chattanooga or Cleveland, because since June, I’ve seen Stephen Curtis Chapman, Third Day, Casting Crowns and Leeland, Heart and tonight Michael W. Smith came down to see us. I got to share a few words (“what are you doing down here?”) and introduce him to my fiancé (notice she is standing closer to him than to me).
The concert was great. I’m a little more nostalgic than most so he could have just sang a bunch of old songs and I’d be happy. So I was glad to hear “Secret Ambition,” “Agnus Dei,” “This Is Your Time” and even “Friends” along with some cool new worship songs.
Before the concert, the local DJ asked how many in the audience had seen Smitty over 5 times. I raised my hand. Over 10 times. I raised my hand, but then I lost count. I first saw him on the Amy Grant Lead Me On tour many years ago (my first paid Christian concert) – he was touring i2Eye (one of my favorites). Through the years, I’ve gotten to see more concerts and was even to share some cool conversations and meals with him, also. After he played some of his songs in a studio for a small group of us, me singing along at one point, I told him how as a kid I would have never dreamed God would open up such opportunities to me. He smiled and said “so you’re living the dream!” Yes I am.
