Duncan Edward Pile Duncan is a writer, novelist, ex-missionary and speaker. In his 20s he was, according to his own words, “a wreck, physically and mentally, having driven myself to a breakdown as a missionary.” In his 30s, he was recovering, inch by infinitesimal inch and in his 40s, he’s now “flying free”. According to Duncan, it’s taken a lot of hard work, in the loving company of God, but those lessons have been valuable, and he’s here to share the best that he has, with anyone who wants to receive it. Duncan said he appreciates the editorial freedom of Patheos and writing about subjects that matter to him, from the heart.
His advice to other Patheos writers is to “Grow a thick skin. I’ve been told I work for Satan and am a false teacher, among other accusations. It’s not personal. Just an angry person smashing away at a keyboard. It’s water off a duck’s back to me now.” He also encourages bridge building.
“Patheos is an interfaith site, and yet so many of the Christian articles are insular – denomination/movement versus another. Something I’m trying to bear in mind is to build bridges and understanding within the faith and beyond, rather than divide,” Duncan said. “That doesn’t mean avoiding difficult topics or raising an important challenge, but it might inform how we speak to and of each other. I’m hoping to see more writers take a unifying approach. Blessed are the peacemakers, and all that.”
