Patheos November 2022 Featured Writer Greg Smith November 1, 2022

Greg SmithGreg Smith is a former lead pastor of several Virginia churches. As a pastor, he would take his sermons and turn them into articles that were then published in Virginia newspapers under the column named “Spirit and Truth.” Now he works as a behavioral health specialist with formerly homeless people and those currently experiencing homelessness. Greg is a father and husband to his wife Christina and lives in the beautiful Fraser Valley of British Columbia.

Greg enjoys writing for Patheos because “I love the sense of community that Patheos writers and readers share. I was attracted to the helpful Patheos staff who assisted with my blog setup, editorial ideas, and more. The readership of my new blog is so much greater than the readership of my old blog–all because of Patheos’s promotion.”

Greg offers up this advice: For me, there are three kinds of articles. Sometimes I write “fluff articles.” I know that’s what they are–they’re 500 words, and I write them on busy weeks. Then there are the pieces that challenge my readers. Those usually take more time to write. They also take more emotional energy, both as I write them and as I reply to the comments.

Finally, there are the articles that challenge me–the ones where I learn something in the process of writing. I’ve learned that I can’t shy away from any of these three types. I can’t get in so much of a groove that I don’t challenge myself. I can’t get so comfortable that I don’t challenge my readers. And I can’t take myself so seriously that I shy away from “fluff articles.”
