Tit as you would be Tatted

Tit as you would be Tatted April 20, 2011

Nick Norelli responded earlier today to my post about God and objective morality. In the process, he mentions John P. Meier’s treatment of the “Golden Rule,” which he feels is best not viewed as authentically coming from Jesus, since it teaches an ethic of reciprocity that is incompatible with other ethical teaching that is likely to be authentically from Jesus.

I remember reading Meier’s treatment of this and disagreeing. I don’t believe that the Golden Rule teaches a “tit for tat” approach to morality. It says, rather, “Tit as you would be tatted” or “Tat as you would be titted.”

Hopefully my point is clear even if some of the above are not really words – or if they are, I would probably just as soon not find out what they mean…

Anyway, the Google Books preview of Meier’s volume, A Marginal Jew: Rethinking the Historical Jesus, Volume 4: Law and Love, is provided below, in case anyone wants to look further at what he has to say on this topic.
