Straining Out Two Corinthians

Straining Out Two Corinthians January 20, 2016

Woe to you, Evangelicals and fundamentalists!

It struck me, in discussing the flap about Donald Trump saying “Two Corinthians” rather than “Second Corinthians,” the reaction says a lot about conservative Evangelicalism. Conservative and fundamentalist Evangelicals will react more strongly to how you refer to the Bible, than to a betrayal of the Bible’s moral teachings.

And hence my paraphrase of Jesus’ saying about straining out a gnat (to avoid impurity) and yet swallowing a camel, which has a pun in Aramaic, and which is about focusing on minutiae while ignoring weightier matters.

And of course, there are other puns that one can make…

Concern for minutiae trumps weightier matters

    Hilarious.

This is a difficult issue, because even though calling 2 Corinthians “Two Corinthians” is hardly a faux pas, it also happened because Trump has never seen a Bible verse before.

But I also agree that if this is your biggest beef RE: Trump and evangelical spirituality, you’ve got some serious troubles.

“Yeah, I was with him on the whole putting Muslims into detention centers, but then he went and called Second Corinthians Two Corinthians, and now I don’t know what to think. Maybe he’s not as good a Christian as I thought.”

I thought I was liberal who were calling out him.on it, not evangelicals. They seem to be largely soaking up whatever he says.

But I mean it’s pretty apparent the guy has hardly, if ever read the bible and certainly never paid attention in church
