I came across this quote from Susan Shaw in an article by Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz about religion and liberal education.
Yanklowitz says in the article: “When religious pedagogy becomes more open and inclusive, the benefit will be great: fully-rounded people willing to change the world for the better.”
We are lucky that the Jesus of history who is now being unearthed is closer to the worldview of critical, liberal scholars than that of conservative evangelicals.
This is what is scary about faithful people who uncritically devote their lives to someone or something. Imagine the horrific consequences we would be dealing with right now if we had documented sayings from Jesus (say, in the Gospel of Mark) that were homophobic. It seems to be serendipity that the Jesus critical scholars have found turned out to be a nice guy.
