After lunch Guy Bonneau gave a main paper, about Caravaggio’s paintings considered in terms of reception history, utilizing a framework provided by Paul Ricoeur. Many details that were discussed were things that I would not have noticed on my own. In his Emmaus painting, for instance, we have rotting fruit precariously near the edge of the table, perhaps symbolizing the precarious proximity of life and death.
