Butt Dust

Butt Dust March 8, 2017

Via Jerry Coyne comes the above image, presumably from an Ash Wednesday bulletin. Is it evidence of the truly negative view of human beings that some Christians have? Or is it just evidence of how crucial it is to proofread very carefully, and not just look for the squiggly red underlining in your Word processing software?

Does anyone know where this came from originally and whether they typo was caught before the congregation saw it?

  • With or without the misspelling in this passage, I much prefer Carl Sagan’s perspective:

“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.”

I don’t know if this is authentic, but it’s a really old joke.
A child in church listens intently as the pompous preacher prays: “O, Lord, we know that in your eyes we are but dust…”
And the child pipes up, “Mommy, what is butt dust?”
