When not too long ago I shared N. T. Wright’s entertaining reworking of the Beatles song “Yesterday,” making it about Genesis, it got me thinking that it might be fun to do something similar. And so here is a reworking of another classic Beatles tune with new, Genesis-related lyrics, for your amusement. Lyrics follow below the video, as well as being embedded in the video itself.
Let There Be
On the first day of creation
God made light so we could see
Speaking words of wisdom, “Let there be…”
On the second day he made a dome
To let us have some room to breathe
To separate the waters, “Let there be…”
Let there be, let there be, let there be, let there be
Shine into the darkness, Let there be…”
On the third and fourth days, God made
stuff that scarcely interests me
Weren’t there land and light already? “Let there be…”
And on the fifth day, every sort of
critter there could ever be
Let Earth and sea produce them, “Let there be…”
Let there be, let there be, let there be, let there be
There will be creation, “Let there be…”
Let there be, let there be, let there be, let there be
Speaking words of wisdom, “Let there be…”
On the sixth day God made humans
to rule over everything
Let them have dominion, “Let there be…”
And if this story gives you trouble,
don’t take it so literally
It’s poetry, not science – Let Genesis be!
Let there be, let there be, let there be, let there be
There will be creation, “Let there be…”
Let there be, let there be, let there be, let there be
Speaking words of wisdom, “Let there be…”
Let there be, let there be, let there be, let there be
It’s poetry, not science – Let there be!
