One could suggest that refusing the satchel is the reason why the commandments so often get broken…   Read more

A commenter on this blog claimed that his objection to evolution is not motivated by theology, but the simple fact that evolution is patently absurd. From the perspective of everyday experience, he is surely right. We do not see the kinds of changes that evolution talks about happening before our eyes. Doctors may tell us that viruses and bacteria mutate, but although we may become ill again, evolution as part of that is not something that our eyes can see.... Read more

Via Doctor Who TV, HT IO9, I learned that an animation has been released of the ending of the lost Doctor Who episode “The Tenth Planet,” which featured the first ever instance of the Doctor regenerating. Read more

Ken Ham, the infamous charlatan, has posted a blog post in which he offers the selective protestation at “intolerance” typical of young-earth creationists, in response to a blog post of mine. Hopefully no one will be fooled by his pretending that he thinks all ideas deserve a hearing or equal time. Ham is not eager to see fringe nonsense like Jesus-mythicism getting equal time in universities. Nor does he think that those institutions which adopt an anti-evolutionist stance should let... Read more

This cartoon came to my attention on Facebook: I wonder whether the cartoonist is intentionally playing on the double meaning of “criticism”, or reflects the same confusion educators often encounter in classes. When we talk about “Biblical criticism” the phrase does not mean “criticizing the Bible” – it means the careful, thorough, detailed, scholarly study of the Bible. Such study can indeed lead one to ask questions and draw conclusions that could be considered “criticism” in the more popular sense.... Read more

A Facebook friend shared both the image above and the one below. It is one of the things I love about this blog that most commenters approach discussion here according to these guidelines. I am not so strict as to make rules of this sort, but there is an ideal standard that most here share and aim for. We may not agree on various points – Taking a rational approach does not preclude disagreement in principle, although it is incompatible... Read more
