James Horner’s film music is fairly well known, but like most film composers, there is incredible music by him that is less well known than it deserves to be. Here are some samples from the science fiction film, Deep Impact. Read more

David Hayward has created yet another excellent cartoon: The irony, of course, is that many Biblicists will not get this, because they cannot envisage a distinction between what God or Jesus says on the one hand, and the Bible on the other. Read more
“The Trial of a Time Lord” is an episode (or sequence of episodes, depending how one thinks about it) that I remember vividly from when I was younger. I also remember before I saw it, a friend of mine telling me some things about it that were so mind-bending I was sure he was lying. But he wasn’t. As I watched the first four parts of “The Trial of a Time Lord” – known as “The Mysterious Planet” – it... Read more
Alcatraz isn’t on tonight, but I’ve been meaning for some time to discuss one of the interesting ideas raised on the show. It’s one that other sci-fi has explored before: the idea that memories make us who we are, and that there could be a treatment for twisted thinking or simply intense sadness or anger or trauma by deleting memories. IO9 has an article on the real life science of memory alteration. And on a related note, Epiphenom has a... Read more

This video has everything one would expect from pseudoscientific charlatans like Ken Ham and his ilk. Appeal to the Bible as the ultimate authority on all matters, emphasis that if the Bible is wrong about one thing then it could be wrong about others, scientific misinformation, denunciation of what scientists claim and demand people without proof, emphasis on “thinking for ourselves.” But it adds a more consistent Biblical literalism rather than the dishonesty about the Bible’s teaching on the Earth’s... You gotta admire Rick Santorum’s honesty. I suspect that most politicians hope that the majority of voters will not have sufficient education to see through at least some of the things they claim. After all, anyone who studies economics will know that no president can guarantee a booming economy no matter what policies they propose or campaign promises they make. Rick Santorum, however, had the honesty to say that he hopes you will be poorly-informed enough to vote for him,... Read more
There are a lot of soundtracks that I love – not only science fiction ones, I might add, and perhaps I will share some of my favorites non-sci-fi film music at some point. But there is a lot of science fiction music that is simply excellent, and which deserves to be better known. If I seem to neglect some obvious choices such as Star Wars, it is not because I love them less, but because I like to champion underdogs.... Read more
Revelation of the Daleks is a rather morbid episode set at a galactic funeral home. It has much comedy in it, as always, but some of the humor is blacker. The Doctor and Peri arrive on the suitably-named planet Necros, supposedly for the funeral or memorial service for a friend of the Doctor’s. The Doctor (we later learn) already suspects that something is not right, since his friend, Professor Arthur Stengos, is not the sort of person to go for... Read more
