The Doctor Who episode “Mission to the Unknown” (sometimes also referred to as “Dalek Cutaway”) was the first episode to air that featured none of the regular characters, including the Doctor. It is a single episode with a single part, serving as a prelude to the twelve-part story “The Daleks’ Master Plan.” In the episode, a group of people has arrived on the planet Kembel. One of them is an agent from earth with a secret agenda: investigate whether the... Read more

The Christmas season is a time for telling the old, old stories again. And this is an oldie but a goodie. Thanks to Ben Blackwell for the reminder. Read more

I previously mentioned the Doctor Who Christmas cards available on the BBC Doctor Who web page. Now IO9 has a gallery of geeky sci-fi cards, including the gems below: I am grateful to Jeff Carter for pointing out the existence of Star Wars snowflake patterns. And the official Star Wars blog has things like a gingerbread AT-AT and a mostly chocolate Ewok village. The Star Trek fan may prefer redshirt cookies. If you prefer hard science rather than science fiction... Read more

I found the article in today’s New York Times about Evangelical voters striking. The attitude of those mentioned in or interviewed for the article seems to be “anyone but Obama.” They would prefer a “big government Republican” to a “big government Democrat.” They would prefer a Mormon and a person with a history of infidelity to Obama. Why? Is he “the wrong kind of Christian” and if so, in what sense? Or is this just more evidence that Evangelicals really... Read more

As Doctor Who fans wait for the return of Doctor Who, perhaps now is a good time to revisit the ending of the finale from last season. They kept us wondering what the “first question” might be for long enough. Now that we know that the question is “Doctor Who?” what do you think the answer might be? Why has the Doctor been running from it? Why would a religious order be devoted to that question and to preventing it... Read more

I am grateful to Eisenbrauns for sending me a free review copy of John H. Walton’s book Genesis 1 as Ancient Cosmology. This is the most recent of several books Walton has written which relate in some way to this topic. I wrote a multi-post review of Walton’s book The Lost World of Genesis One which you can read by clicking through on this link. That book was written primarily as one Evangelical to others, with Walton seeking to articulate... Read more

There are lots of parodies of and responses to Rick Perry’s “Strong” ad. The one by Jesus himself is probably the best so far: See too Bob Cargill’s post, which not only shares a parody by a Rabbi, but also observes that Rick Perry is dressed like a character from Brokeback Mountain in the ad! Also on target is this depiction of Voldemort as Rick Perry: Read more

In some happy news for Doctor Who fans, two long missing episodes of Doctor Who have been found. One is part three of “Galaxy 4” from the William Hartnell era, which I blogged about recently. The other is part of “The Underwater Menace” with Patrick Troughton. Here’s a clip from the former: You can watch clips from both episodes at Doctor Who News Online. Read more
