I was invited at the last minute to participate in the Patheos Book Club discussion of Jeffrey J. Kripal’s book Mutants and Mystics: Science Fiction, Superhero Comics, and the Paranormal. Since I leave today for a conference (at which I will be speaking, appropriately enough, about religion and science fiction), I have had to rush through sections that I would have preferred to savor, and am churning out quickly a brief review when I would have liked to blog through... Read more

Mark Goodacre will be speaking at SBL about blogs, podcasts and other time-wasters. The title is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, since he is still blogging and doesn’t consider it an utter waste of time. Click through to read his thoughts, even if you aren’t going to (or already at) SBL. Read more

I just had this bit of science news pop up on a blog I subscribe to: OPERA Confirms: Neutrinos Travel Faster Than Light!! It appears that the result has been scrutinized more carefully, and turns out to be correct. What this will mean for physics – and the future of interstellar travel some of us are eagerly hoping for – remains to be seen, but it certainly is interesting and intriguing! Read more

“Particularly in the age of the Internet, it is not hard at all to find someone with Ph.D. in a relevant field who lends a countervoice to mainstream thinking. This is true in the sciences, in biblical studies, and I’m sure any academic field. There is always someone out there who thinks he or she has cracked the code, hidden to most others, and disproved the majority. And, in my experience, too often the promotion of minority voices is laced... Read more

Thanks to ProfHacker for sharing the news that an add-on is available for Google Chrome and Firefox which will restore the “share” function in Google Reader. I am trying it out, and so have put the feed reader with shared items from other blogs back in the sidebar! It took a moment, but soon updated with new content. Others who miss the Google Reader sidebar may also want to try it out. Let me know how it works for you!... Read more

Jeff Carter is continuing his depiction of sci-fi and comic book characters in poses and frameworks of religious iconography. Here’s his latest, which he calls “The Praying Jewbacca” since it is based on Marc Chagall’s painting “The Praying Jew.” It is good to see that he is expanding to include other religious traditions, since the images thus far have for the most part drawn from Christianity (see for instance “Hulk Want In,” based on the traditional depiction of Jesus standing at... Read more

I have posted a very rough draft of chapter 30 of the Mandaean Book of John, which depicts Jesus coming to John the Baptist in order to be baptized by him. You can read it by clicking through to the Mandaean Book of John blog. This is one of several chapters that I will be referring to in my conference paper on “The Satirical Use of Christian Material in the Mandaean Book of John” in the Aramaic section at SBL... Read more
