I’m sure many of you were startled, shocked, and concerned when you saw Michael Gorman’s most recent blog post, “Chris Tilling on the Cross.” Do not be alarmed. A close look at the content indicates that the headline does not mean either that Michael is confused about who died for his sins, or that Chris has been martyred. He meant that Chris Tilling talked about the cross. Click through to see Chris’ Good Friday meditations, or simply to express your... Read more

When I travel to Israel this summer, I will be testing out the blogging capabilities of the iPad 2, in the hope that when I travel with students I can keep them in touch with their families and post photos from the trip. To that end, I’ll be trying out some blogging apps, including the one I am composing this on, namely BlogPress. One very nice feature is that you can take a photo using the built-in iPad 2 camera... Read more

The Safe Assign feature on Blackboard is great for detecting and deterring plagiarism. But I’m finding an additional use fot it in teaching freshman core writing courses. If you teach a course in which students have to submit a draft, get feedback (and perhaps a grade) on the draft, and then revise the essay and submit it again, Safe Assign will give a “false positive” of a high likelihood or certainty of plagiarism, because it will match that assignment against the... Read more

“R. Joseph Hoffmann is sexy” That’s what someone typed into a search engine today. And it brought them to my blog! And in the process, I learned that I am #17 in the Google search engine ranking for that search string. Go figure. Anyway, well done, Joe. I thought you would want to know, and presumed that you would have no objection to my letting others know that at least one person out there thinks you are sexy. I hope... Read more
