This review of Megan Moroney’s Cloud 9 is part of the ongoing “top of the country” series, wherein I review the songs and albums that have hit #1 in the Billboard charts.

Overall, this is an excellent album with some solid songs on it. Some of the stand out songs include:
-“I only miss you” (with Ed Sheeran)
-“Beautiful Things”
-“Bells & Whistles” (with Kacey Musgraves)
And I enjoyed “Stupid,” but as some of my friends would point out, of course I would.
This is an album that is generally targeted at women. At the very least “Wedding Dress” isn’t a song aimed at me–nor is “Convincing” or “Liars & Tigers & Bears” which includes the lyric:
Speak your mind, but not too loudBe sure of yourself, but never too proudPaint yourself pretty, but don’t do too muchBe soft and not bitchy, but you better be toughSmile real big, be happy to loseDon’t have a bad day, there’s cameras on youChampagne problemsI know, I know just a wide-eyed girl, learning the ropes
That’s actually not for me twice over…
For all those reasons I’m probably not the person to comment on the value of this album, though as with the others I’ve reviewed here from a Christian point of view there’s a good balance of honest self-analysis going on here. As even the lyric I posted above shows, there are a lot of competing pressures that women face in the modern world–what is it to be a woman today? “Speak your mind, but not too loud” etc. This is an important question and one that as Christians we have a balancing act to pursue. We ought not give in to the world’s definitions of women (or men for that matter). But we also should admit truth where we see it. And it seems that there’s some truth in many of these songs. That it is solid Country music is all the better.
