That fake sign language interpreter: What was he thinking?

To those outside the deaf community, the sign language interpreter for Nelson Mandela’s memorial may have looked like he was working very hard, translating the spoken words into gestures for four hours.

But he was a complete fake, and his actions outraged deaf people around the world, according to an association for the deaf community in South Africa.

Gawker:

The interpreter, who stood next to President Obama and other world leaders as they delivered their speeches, was “moving his hands around but there was no meaning in what he used his hands for,” Bruno Druchen [director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa] told the Associated Press.

Yep.  Apparently he was just waving his hands around.  And now that you mention it, I have never seen a sign language interpreter spend so much time with his hands clasped over his tummy.  So what was he thinking on this solemn occasion, as he stood on stage with some of the world’s most powerful political figures, commanding the attention of hundreds of thousands of people?

“And now a fast ball.”

“YES.  Another flying invisible pancake. Gotta put that one in my pocket, too!  Take it home to Ma.”

Ugh, I know there are just jokes begging to be told here, but I got a bad case of the Wednesdays or whatever.  Whatcha got?
