Share What Excites Them
No matter the age, we all enjoy sharing what animates us with our loved ones. “With my own children, the way to connect with them has been different at different ages,” said Pam McCoy, who writes at Home of Abundance and is the mom of two teenagers.
When her kids were younger, that meant watching and playing Power Rangers or spending a few minutes jumping on the trampoline with them. She learned about Pokemon, marveled over school art projects, played board games and watched dance practices. “Taking an interest in what your children find interesting is one of the best ways to connect. It doesn’t mean spending hours poring over the subject, but for them to know that you pay attention and care—that’s what matters!”
In order to make connections with your children, you must meet them where they are. “Look at their lives, and find out what interests them. What do they enjoy doing? Who are their friends? Your children’s friends have a big influence on your own children’s behaviors, beliefs, and actions. Get to know your children’s friends,” said Fonseca.
McCoy added, “It boils down to taking the time to get to know your kids and the way to do that is to spend time doing what they love. For a child (and adults, too), that makes them feel loved and feel like they matter to someone.”
