Challenges and When to Let Go

How do you know that you have the best partner for you? How do you know if you’re giving up on someone too soon and are running away from a potentially great relationship? Or how do you know if you’ve worked on your relationship long enough and it’s time to let it go?

The answer is always: Be still and go deep inside yourself; listen to your own inner voice. Ask yourself these questions: Does your partner exhibit behaviors that annoy or disturb you? If these behaviors are merely annoying, can you focus on your partner’s good qualities so that their bad habits don’t bother you? Or is your partner doing something so seriously disturbing that they are diminishing your happiness, well-being, peace of mind, or health? Will they ever change? Do they want to change? In choosing this partner, did you create a mirror for yourself? Are you the one who needs to change — are the problems in this relationship really your own issues? Or did you recreate an old, self-defeating pattern from your childhood? Do you sense that the relationship is unhealthy or unrewarding for you? Are you are afraid to be alone; are you afraid you cannot create something better — something more fulfilling for you?

Deep inside, we all know whether our relationship is healthy, our issues with others are ever going to improve, or a relationship is the best one for us. If a relationship is unfulfilling and we are confused about what steps to take, it may be because we are afraid to face what we are sensing. Perhaps we are afraid to change our own lives, our own behavior, or our own relationship status. As long as we focus our confusion or annoyance on someone else’s flaws, we do not have to face our own fears. And we will stay stuck until we are honest enough and brave enough to dive into our own fears and deal with them.
