Lest Anyone Forget

Lest Anyone Forget January 14, 2017

Here’s a tweet we could all stand to remember right now:

Let’s all compare John Lewis’s decision to permit himself to be beaten into unconsciousness in peaceful protest on “Bloody Sunday,” with what TV’s Donald Trump has called his “personal Vietnam.”

Let us remember that any real greatness America has ever had has been because of those who courageously stood up against the abuse of power,  and never because of the money and privilege of the powerful. Willingness to stand up for what is right makes a person, and a society, great. Willingness to suffer rather than tolerate the oppression of others, makes a person great. Bearing witness to the sufferings of others even if it costs you, is the mark of a great citizen.

Small and cowardly people exploit the fears and prejudices of their society in order to gain power.

And having remembered this, let us ask ourselves who is “all talk.”
