This is a story of a horrible person doing monstrous things.
His name is Douglas Karpen. He’s an abortionist from the Houston, Texas area, and he’s been accused of doing things that surpass even the worst imaginations of what abortion entails.
Back in 2012, four women who worked in Karpen’s Houston facilities had had enough. They reached out to Operation Rescue, one of the leading Christian, pro-life activist organizations in the nation. At that time, they sent information, suggesting proof that Karpen was violating the law.
One of the women sent photos she claims to have snapped with her cell phone, showing large babies. The workers claim these images had been taken at the abortion facility, and that the babies had been born alive, but that after birth, they’d been killed by Karpen either slashing their necks or twisting them.
The images were received by Cheryl Sullenger, Senior Vice President of Operation Rescue.
On May 15, 2013, Operation Rescue released a report along with the photos that supported allegations that Karpen was murdering babies that survived the abortion process. Other alleged crimes included sexual harassment and/or abuse of employees and patients.
That report and ensuing complaints prompted a grand jury “investigation” that declined to indict Karpen. Operation Rescue later learned that grand jury was tainted by improper communications between then District Attorney Devon Anderson and Karpen’s criminal defense attorney Chip Lewis, who were close family friends. Lewis later donated $25,000 to Anderson’s political campaigns.
It’s the kind of corrupt, backroom dealing that keeps these awful, heartless individuals in business.
And by “heartless individuals” I mean abortionists and politicians, like Anderson.
Operation Rescue weren’t done.
They next reached out to the U.S. House Select Panel on Infant Lives. In 2015, the panel investigated reports that abortion profiteers, Planned Parenthood, were harvesting body parts from aborted infants for sale.
The House Select Panel then referred the case to the United States Department of Justice, on December 7, 2016, while it was still under the leadership of Attorney General Loretta Lynch for investigation and prosecution.
That didn’t leave a lot of time for any action to be taken, given that a new administration was about to take office.
In 2017, the House Select Panel once again referred Karpen to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution. This time, it was under new Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
It took a bit, but in August 2017, Sullenger wrote to Sessions and asked him to investigate the claims against Karpen.
In a letter that was dated May 11, 2018 Operation Rescue was informed that the case of Douglas Karpen was being forwarded to the FBI Houston field office. This thing that began in 2012 was about to culminate in an investigation of Karpen for the murder of live infants, who had survived attempted abortions.
“The letter I received from the Department of Justice is encouraging. The photos depict wounds inflicted on those babies that could not have been done inside the womb. After having personally attended the Pennsylvania trial of Kermit Gosnell, who was convicted of murdering living babies after failed abortions, I knew we could never give up seeking prosecutions for Karpen’s similar crimes,” said Sullenger. “We are grateful for this new FBI investigation that has renewed our hope that Karpen may finally be brought to justice.”
Hope, indeed.
No matter where you stand, pro-life or pro-abortion, you must be moved by the thought of a live infant being killed in such a manner, simply because he or she made it through a botched abortion attempt.
In a decent, civil society, there is no place for this, or those like Douglas Karpen, who would commit such blatant evil.
