Trey Gowdy Gives President Trump Good News, so Why Isn’t He Calming Down?

Trey Gowdy Gives President Trump Good News, so Why Isn’t He Calming Down? May 30, 2018

If you’re not in trouble, why act like you are?

It’s an appropriate question to ask, given President Trump’s increasingly shrill and pointed attacks against special counsel Robert Mueller and the Russia probe.

While in Nashville on Tuesday night for a rally, Trump did the only thing he really knows how to do, at this point: He rehashed the 2016 election, complete with attacks on Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton (And you can stop chanting, “Lock her up!” because he never intended to do that).

He also attacked the ongoing probe with his latest hook – somebody infiltrated his campaign.

In fact, he asked the crowd if anyone there was infiltrating his campaign.

He is continuing on with this maddening line, referring to Stefan A. Halper, an FBI informant who approached several of his campaign aides, after it had been determined that they’d had contact with Russians.

The thing is, there’s no truth to it. He has been informed. He has no excuse to keep pushing this line, whatsoever.

What’s more, if this was simply a case of he or his supporters feeling as if he’s being unfairly targeted, that’s another excuse blown apart.

Last week, lawmakers met in several highly classified meetings, in order to go over information from the Justice Department and the FBI, in regards to the work Halper was doing and the Russia probe, in general.

After meeting with FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy came away with what should be seen as comforting news to the president.

“I am even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got, and that it has nothing to do with Donald Trump,” Gowdy said on Fox News’s “The Story.”

I’ve said that myself, over and over.

Donald Trump, personally, is likely innocent of any wrongdoing during the election. His fault lies in surrounding himself with a cast of shady, corrupt characters. Their activities are splashing back on him.

Pushing back against everything Trump and the talking heads that parrot his every line, no matter how insane, have been saying, Gowdy went on to insist that the probe into Russia’s activities during the 2016 election is a legitimate one, and that Trump should calm down.

“Chris Wray and Rod Rosenstein have at least made it clear to us Donald Trump was never the target of the investigation, he’s not the current target of the investigation. Now, keep in mind, that can all change depending on what a witness says, but as of now, I think Chris Wray and Rod Rosenstein are stunned whenever people think Trump is the target of their investigation,” Gowdy said.

Representative Gowdy has the luxury of speaking freely on this issue. He’s not running for reelection. He’s been speaking out more and more in recent weeks about the toxic partisanship in Washington.

It has become so bad that he decided not to run for reelection. Instead, he’ll be returning to his life as a prosecutor in South Carolina when his current term ends.

Expect to see Gowdy excoriated in some Trump-loving circles for stomping on the narrative of Trump-as-victim, even as his words should be seen as comfort.

For some reason, Trump needs to keep up the heat on the intelligence community, and this probe into Russian activities.

You can make up your own mind as to why that might be.
