Rising Socialist Star, Ocasio-Cortez, Is Rubbing Democrats the Wrong Way

Rising Socialist Star, Ocasio-Cortez, Is Rubbing Democrats the Wrong Way July 18, 2018

She’s a rising star.

Or just a pretty dud.

What we do know about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is that she has all the intellectual depth of a Pez dispenser, and even her own [sort of] party is horrified that “Freebie Barbie” actually defeated one of their reliable workhorses, New York Representative Joseph Crowley, in June.

While some may be excited and see the goal of a socialist state in the United States as a possibility, others are not so enthused.

What Ms. Ocasio-Cortez and those of her unthinking ilk don’t seem capable of grasping is that, as the quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson says: A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take everything that you have.

We’ve seen socialism tried in the world before. It never works out well and it is anathema to our nation’s Constitution.

Just look at Venezuela. That’s not what the founders intended for our nation. Anyone who thinks everything from healthcare to college to housing should be subsidized by the government, and who decries capitalism and industriousness while sipping their skinny lattes and tapping away on their iPhones is an airhead, and should not be taken seriously.

On Tuesday, former Senator Joe Lieberman expressed his concern over the rise of Ocasio-Cortez through an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal.

Lieberman is a former member of the Democrat party, but flipped to independent. In his piece, he urged New York’s voters to reconsider their primary choice and to look for Crowley on their ballot. John Crowley will still appear on the ballot under the Working Families Party, in November.

It’s another chance to undo a heinous – and potentially disastrous – wrong, he feels. That, however, depends on Crowley. He has stated previously that he’s not actively running in the general election.

“On Election Day, his name will be on the ballot as the endorsed candidate of the Working Families Party,” he wrote. “But for Mr. Crowley to have a chance at getting re-elected, he will have to decide if he wants to remain an active candidate. I hope he does.”

Mr. Lieberman argued that Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s policies “are so far from the mainstream, her election in November would make it harder for Congress to stop fighting and start fixing problems.

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is a proud member of the Democratic Socialists of America, whose platform, like hers, is more Socialist than Democratic,” he wrote.

“Her dreams of new federal spending would bankrupt the country or require very large tax increases, including on the working class,” he continued. “Her approach foresees government ownership of many private companies, which would decimate the economy and put millions out of work.”

Like I said: Socialism doesn’t work, and to outright call for it in this nation is frightening.

Lieberman isn’t the only one to see just what a train wreck Ocasio-Cortez and her extreme, ill-advised notions are.

Representative Alcee Hastings also warned against alienating moderate Democrats.

“Meteors fizz out,” he said. “What she will learn in this institution is that it’s glacial to begin with, and therefore no matter how far you rise, that’s just how far you will ultimately get your comeuppance.”

Hastings may be old. He may not be of the Starbucks and man-bun set, but he knows how the game in Washington is played.

Without mentioning Ms. Ocasio-Cortez directly, Democratic Sen. Chris Coons last week slammed the party’s “relentless race to the left” and called on fellow Democrats to abandon radical ideas like “Abolish ICE” — a policy Ms. Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed.

“If we as a Democratic Party are going to move from a minority at every level that is dedicated to resistance, to a majority that is capable of governing, we have got to move from grievance to optimism,” Mr. Coons said. “And we’ve got to abandon a politics of anxiety that is characterized by wild-eyed proposals and instead deliver ideas and practical solutions.”

Catch that part: a Democrat lawmaker is even sounding the alarm about the party going too far to the left and calling for commonsense.

This isn’t to suggest that Democrats are suddenly going to have the answers. We already know they don’t, but even they’re not willing to burn down our institutions to cater to the fantasyland of dullards that see socialism as a legitimate political choice for a free people.

Ocasio-Cortez is coming off as some kind of political “mean girl,” as well.

She took a swipe at her former opponent on social media and some saw it as “petty” and “immature.”

Again, he said he’s not actively running, and he offered this explanation for his name being on the ballot:

He also had his defenders.

Democratic Rep. Lacy Clay called Ms. Ocasio-Cortez “petty” for attacking Mr. Crowley publicly.

“Once an election is over and you win, why are you still angry?” he told The Hill. “I think it’s a lack of maturity on her part, and a lack of political acumen, for her to be that petty.

“We as Democrats better figure out who the real enemy is. And it’s not each other,” he added.

Well, let’s not say enemies, for starters. That’s where we all end up in trouble, to begin with. You’ve got people with different views of how to make the nation run smoothly.

Except for socialists. Socialists are the enemy.

Democratic Rep. Bill Pascrell said Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is “no doubt” making enemies in the party.

“She’s carrying on and she ain’t gonna make friends that way,” he told The Hill. “Joe conceded, wished her well, said he would support her … so she doesn’t know what the hell she’s talking about.”

I don’t think they like her, very much.

She inexperienced and is bungling her way through her campaign. We’ve seen that somewhere before, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Democrats of New York really are that far removed from sane political discourse, or if we should just carve off that part of the map and set them adrift in the Atlantic.
