Tariffs Working So Well for Farmers, Trump Threatens More on Foreign Cars

Tariffs Working So Well for Farmers, Trump Threatens More on Foreign Cars July 25, 2018

If you’re not getting that sinking feeling yet, just wait.

The only ones now who have seen President Trump’s acquiescence to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the world stage in Helsinki, Finland on July 16, have seen his maniacal, unconstructive tweets, and who are witnessing his economy-busting tariff slash bailout combo punch, and who aren’t convinced that he’s under direct orders to weaken our nation, are those who have been indoctrinated.

And no, I don’t think this is an overreaction on my part.

With every move and every attack on the foundations of our system, this president acts as a hostile foreign agent.

When our longtime allies and neighbors are deemed foes, but our greatest geopolitical foes, proven to have taken hostile, covert actions against us, are treated with more respect, then something is very wrong.

Rather than a repeat of Senator Joseph McCartney’s “red scare,” our current predicament seems to have teeth.

We have a United States president actively working to ruin us.

If we cut out all the Putin-love, we could go straight to the oppressive tariffs that are ruining American businesses, as well as the national debt that has made an astonishing jump under the Trump administration.

We can’t survive this way.

On Tuesday, in response to the pain being felt by farmers who are affected by President Trump’s tariffs, the White House announced a bailout of $12 billion to farmers.

Where is Congress, who hold the power of the purse?

It’s not that I want farmers to suffer. They shouldn’t. I question, however, the sanity of imposing tariffs – against the advice of policy advisers and lawmakers – then robbing taxpayers to offer a bailout to those hurt by the tariffs.

Remember Obama’s “cash for clunkers” and auto industry bailout?

Republicans HOWLED with disapproval over that move.

This is no different.

Now, it appears that the president is ignoring Republican history.

Earlier Wednesday, it was reported that Trump is planning 25 percent tariffs against $200 billion in foreign cars.

The Washington Post, citing three people briefed on the internal discussions, reported on Wednesday that many of Trump’s senior economic advisers think the president is ready to move forward with the plan.

The move would come despite warnings from various GOP lawmakers and business executives who have maintained that such stiff tariffs would damage the U.S. economy and lead to intense political backlash.

The question becomes: If farmers get a bailout, do car dealerships? Auto makers? What about every other industry that will be hurt by these disastrous moves?

I can’t help but think of that cheering crowd at the South Carolina rally last month. As a show of Trump’s indifference to anything other than his own agenda, he trashed automakers, BMW, the largest employer in the state of South Carolina.

So if Trump punishes BMW, how does that affect those Trump supporters?

I suppose that’s for somebody else to concern themselves with, because the president certainly is not.

Trump tweeted out earlier Wednesday:

“Every time I see a weak politician asking to stop Trade talks or the use of Tariffs to counter unfair Tariffs, I wonder, what can they be thinking?” Trump tweeted on Wednesday. “Are we just going to continue and let our farmers and country get ripped off? Lost $817 Billion on Trade last year. No weakness!”

He speaks of weakness as if he’s opposed to it, yet, every move he’s made has been designed to make us, as a nation, weaker.

Trump met with European Union Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker today, in order to bang out details for a new trade agreement.
