Special Counsel Robert Mueller Would Like to Have a Word With President Trump

Special Counsel Robert Mueller Would Like to Have a Word With President Trump 2018-08-01T18:39:05-04:00

Where did he think this was going to go?

As it is, President Trump’s raging Twitter storm from Wednesday morning may not have been completely without a preceding irritant.

As we discussed earlier, the president took to Twitter to attack the ongoing Russia probe and to call on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to end it.

So is this attempted obstruction?

It kind of looks like it, but it will be special counsel Robert Mueller’s call, because I don’t think Jeff Sessions is going to risk jumping into this particular fray. He’s got enough on his plate, as it is.

There’s a lot going on in the probe, and it’s getting closer to President Trump’s door. Special counsel Robert Mueller wants to speak with Trump, and specifically, he wants to talk about obstruction.

According to sources, the president learned within the last day that the special counsel will limit the scope of questioning and would like to ask questions both orally and written for the President to respond to.

According to sources familiar with the President’s reaction Wednesday morning, that was the genesis for his early morning tweet storm. Trump took to twitter in one of his strongest attacks against the federal probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, saying: “This is a terrible situation and Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now, before it continues to stain our country any further. Bob Mueller is totally conflicted, and his 17 Angry Democrats that are doing his dirty work are a disgrace to USA!”

I think most people would see this reaction and get the impression that President Trump really, really does not want to answer Robert Mueller’s questions.

Another interesting point to keep in mind is that a week ago, the president’s legal team, led by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, requested that there be no questions about obstruction.

Interesting, indeed.

“We have a list of questions that are fairly narrowed but we are waiting on the special counsel’s response,” Giuliani told ABC last week.

Speaking to reporters after an appearance in New Hampshire today, Giuliani said he had received a response from the special counsel’s office without getting into details.

“They took about 10 days and yesterday we got a letter back for them. Now we’re in the process of responding to their proposal,” Giuliani said.

I’m guessing by the president’s morning tweet storm, he didn’t like Mueller’s response to their request to leave obstruction out of questioning.

And today didn’t help their case.

At all.
