Texas Waiter, Stiffed on a Tip for the Most Hateful Reason, Turns It Around for Good

Texas Waiter, Stiffed on a Tip for the Most Hateful Reason, Turns It Around for Good July 20, 2018

This is absolutely the wrong way to act, but this young man is to be commended for responding with love.

So right off the bat, let us ask the question: What is in a name? Would not a rose, by any other name still smell as sweet?

You’ve all probably heard that and hopefully, you can guess where this is going: Don’t make assumptions about anybody, based on a name.

Today’s tale of idiots being idiotic involves Khalil Cavil, a 20-year old waiter with Saltgrass Steak House, in Odessa, Texas.

Khalil was working his regular shift on July 14, when a customer left a nasty surprise for him.

On the receipt for the $108.73 bill, the customer left no tip, but instead, circled Khalil’s name, and wrote, “We don’t tip terrorists.”

Well… They seem nice.

Khalil is a Christian, by the way.

Apparently, seeing “Server: Khalil” and a brown skinned young man serving them was just too much.

I mean, they weren’t so disturbed that they walked out of the restaurant or asked to be moved to another table. They ordered, ate their meal, and left, with no incident.

It was just this one, ignorant thing.

Young Khalil shared a picture of the receipt, with the identifying information blacked out, on his Facebook page.

He would have been well within his rights to blast the bigoted cheapskates.

That’s not what he did.

Wrote Khalil:

“Last night at work I received this note from one of my tables. At the moment I didn’t know what to think nor what to say, I was sick to my stomach. I share this because I want people to understand that this racism, and this hatred still exists. Although this is nothing new, it is still something that will test your faith,” Cavil wrote, with a link to the bill receipt in which the unnamed customer had circled the name “Khalil” and wrote with a pen, “we don’t tip terrorist.”

“All day I’ve had to remind myself that Jesus died for these people too. I have decided to let this encourage me, and fuel me to change the world the only way I know how. So to all the haters out there, keep talkin, [you’re] only helping me step into my destiny,” the waiter added.

That’s awesome.

“Khalil” means “friend” in Arabic. The young man was named after a friend of his father’s who died in an accident, while in the military.

So far, the post has received over 22,000 responses, mostly well-wishers and supporters, appalled at the young man’s treatment.

He also doesn’t want this to be about himself. There are bigger issues to address.

“It’s about this hatred that is still going on, that is still here and prevalent. I just wanted people to understand that,” the man said.

Terry Turney, CEO of Saltgrass Steak House stated that they stood by their employee.

Turney added, “Racism of any form is unacceptable and we have banned this customer from returning to our restaurant.”

Excellent.

For his part, young Mr. Cavil is taking that ugly situation and making something good come from it.

While thanking those who have flooded him with support, he later announced his plans, moving forward:

“To all of the people who have sent me money I want to thank you as well. I want to make it very clear that this was never about the tip nor the money. It was about shedding a light on racism and sharing the love of Jesus. It was about igniting conversations because I believe real change happens when we start talking about the issue and acknowledging [it’s] there,” he wrote.

“So thank you to everyone who has invested in me over these past few days. With much prayer, I have decided to put all of the funds I have received into missionary work through my home church,” he added.

“This will help other people spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to different places around the world. Let’s make the enemy pay by helping other people establish the Kingdom of God here on earth. Thank you!”

Wow!

In a world full of the perpetually aggrieved and spoiled millennials, Khalil Cavil is a breath of fresh air, and a true example of Christ at work.

This is life, done right.
