Day 5: A Reflection on Food Values

Day 5: A Reflection on Food Values 2014-03-13T15:37:04-06:00

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

“It’s easy for Americans to forget that the food they eat doesn’t magically appear on a supermarket shelf.” – Christopher Dodd

“Shake the hand that feeds you.” – Michael Pollan

“A country like America has twice as much food on its shop shelves and in its restaurants than is actually required to feed the American people . . . We, the people, do have the power to stop [the] tragic waste of resources if we regard it as socially unacceptable to waste food.” – Tristram Stuart

Questions for Reflection

In the recent 40 Days for Food Justice project posts, we read about food values, the ways our food choices are constrained, food waste, and personal eating habits. As we sit with the stories and the perspectives that have been shared, reflect on the following questions:

1. What are your values? What are your food values? How do they differ? How are they similar?

2. What limits your ability to each intentionally? Time? Budget limitations?

3. How have your eating habits changed over the last 5 years? 10 years? Are your food choices improving?

4. Do you know where your food comes from?

Food Justice Challenge

This week, pay attention to how much food gets wasted in your household.
