Day 8: A Reflection on Hungry Kids

Day 8: A Reflection on Hungry Kids March 13, 2014

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.'” Matthew 25:37-40

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” – Mother Teresa

“Hunger is not a problem. It is an obscenity. How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” – Anne Frank

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead, anthropologist

“If we can conquer space, we can conquer childhood hunger.” – Buzz Aldrin, Astronaut

Questions for Reflection

In the recent 40 Days for Food Justice project posts, we read about The Problem with Three Day Weekends and about an ecumenical hunger ministry. As we sit with the stories and the perspectives that have been shared, reflect on the following questions:

1. How do your local schools address the issue of children whose families are food insecure? Are there programs in place?

2. What does ‘food justice’ look like for children who don’t have enough to eat?

3. As followers of Jesus, what is our responsibility in the face of children who do not have enough to eat?

Food Justice Challenge

This week, talk to the principal at a local school and see if there are children who need food assistance. Plug into an existing program or, if no program is available, consider starting one.
