Day 22: A Reflection on Loving Your Neighbor And Yourself

Day 22: A Reflection on Loving Your Neighbor And Yourself March 29, 2014

“Then God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.’  So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”  Genesis 1:26-27

“I never look at the masses as my responsibility. I look at the individual. I can love only one person at a time. I can feed only one person at a time. Just one, one, one. So you begin…I began. I picked up one person — Maybe if I didn’t pick up that one person I wouldn’t have picked up 42,000. Just begin…one, one, one.”  – Mother Teresa

“For now I ask no more Than the justice of eating.” Pablo Neruda, Chilean Poet, Noble Prize Winner

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” – Hippocrates

Questions for Reflection

In the recent 40 Days for Food Justice project posts, we read about a food bank ministry and the struggle with eating disorders. As we sit with the stories and the perspectives that have been shared, reflect on the following questions:

1. What does food justice have to do with loving your neighbor? with loving yourself?

2. What food choices can you make that would allow you to take better care of your body?

3. When we take seriously that we are made in the image of God, what implications does that have for our lives?

4. When we take seriously that every person we meet is made in the image of God, what implications does that have for our lives?

Food Justice Challenge

This week, look for food justice opportunities in your community to show love to your neighbors, and look for food justice opportunities to show greater love to yourself.
