Dems make Soc. Sec. “Demands”

Dems make Soc. Sec. “Demands” August 14, 2005

I’m always amused at these headlines. The Dems “DEMAND” Conditions on Social Security.

They “demand?” They didn’t even want to talk about it – now they want to make “demands.”

On the eve of Social Security’s 70th anniversary, Democrats said on Saturday they are ready to move toward revamping the financially troubled retirement program but warned against stripping away benefits to retirees and relying on private accounts for funding.

“We have a moral obligation to stand up and protect Social Security for the next 70 years and beyond — that means stopping privatization and dropping partisan demands for private accounts,” said Rep. John Salazar, a Colorado Democrat, in his response to
President George W. Bush’s radio address.

Help me out, here. Last year, before the election, the Democrats kept telling us SS was in great shape! It didn’t need to be futzed with! That damn Bush was lying again!

I’m glad to see the Dems wanting to get on board, although I think these “demands” are a bit a theater. Bush’s plan never was going to “strip away benefits to retirees” etc.

This “we have no ideas but we’re going to tell you why all of your ideas are wrong” schtick is getting old.
