Two must-reads for you, over at Patheos–well, three, actually! If you are a fan of books and movies, and I know you are, check out Joseph Susanka’s excellent take on Paved Over Grace; The Road to Perdition, and how Hollywood deviated from the book in ways large and small, to essentially eliminate all the grace-notes, but manage to focus (with perhaps too much emphasis) on the message of “non-violence.” Including both, says Susanka, would be better: The film’s final lines,... Read more

You guys know I usually take a lot of time to put together as comprehensive a “gift idea” post, around this time of year. But I am just so swamped, and so up against a hard deadline, and so brain-fried, I wonder if you will mind if I dispense with the chatty stuff and just give you links to explore? Yes? Then here we go! Books, books, books: I am totally into giving books this year, and that’s largely because... Read more

I remember once discussing psalms with a nun and mentioning that one of my favorites was Psalm 19, which begins: The heavens proclaim the glory of God, and the firmament shows forth the work of his hands. Day unto day takes up the story and night unto night makes known the message. No speech, no word, no voice is heard yet their span extends through all the earth, their words to the utmost bounds of the world. There he has... Read more

When I studied Anatomy and Physiology in college, the lesson that included microchimerism, became instructive to me on a different level. Learning that every child leaves within his mother a microscopic bit of himself–and that it remains within her forever–the dogma of the Immaculate Conception instantly became both crystal clear and brilliant to me. Mary, then, was indeed a tabernacle within which the Divinity did reside – not for a limited time, but for all of her life. Understanding this... Read more

The latest entry into the Habit of Witness series is a particularly poignant one, written by Carmelite Sister Timothy Marie. When the convent car breaks down, Sister seeks out some help and her need allows kindness to come full circle, putting paid to “centuries of ignorance and prejudice: A lot of big trucks were parked nearby. Truckers! My answer had come! Saying good-bye to my newfound friend, I went to the crosswalk and, feeling like Julie Andrews in the Sound... Read more

It is so incredibly blustery out there, today! But I like rain and wind! Dew and rain, bless the Lord. Frost and chill, bless the Lord. Ice and snow, bless the Lord. Nights and days, bless the Lord. Light and darkness, bless the Lord. Lightnings and clouds, bless the Lord. – Daniel 3: 68-73 Hum, dum, dum…let’s linkaround! Remember yesterday I wrote about the Cancun Climate and their dumb ideas about rationing? Allahpundit picks up the story, and provides video.... Read more

Because I am a bit of a curmudgeon, and I admit it, I wasn’t so smitten with a recent viral video of Handel’s Alleluia Chorus being performed in Macy’s. The whole thing felt claustrophobic, and visually, I found it unmoving. Is there anything less interesting to look at that someone videotaping something? But then I am prejudiced against the whole notion that everything must be videotaped at all times. I’ve groused about that elsewhere on the blog. But I liked... Read more

Regular readers know I am a big U2 fan. I’ve even slipped U2 songs into previous Advent posts. But if the phonies in Cancun are going to start talking about rationing the lives of others in order to save Gaia, they’re going to have to start looking at other excesses they can eliminate, first. That’s my Tuesday column: Rationing Bono & Other Gaia-Saving Ideas Curiously, no one at these conferences ever suggests that less-draconian measures, affecting a relative minority of... Read more
