During the Bush administration, we heard the frequent straw-man charges, from the Democrats and the left, that they were being called “un-American” for opposing various policies. Hillary Clinton famously bellowed about it, but if the accusation of being “un-American” had been made with anything like the frequency the Dems pretended, it’s nebulous in my memory. Since January of ’09, the Democrats have unleashed the “un-American” charge with some real frequency. Jon Stewart, who should know better, even wondered if hoping... Read more

So, let me get this straight. According to Victor Davis Hanson (who would know) there’s some folk out there not making their full disclosures in a timely manner: [Peter Galbraith] . . . The son of share-the-wealth John K. Galbraith, Galbraith Minor barnstormed the air waves in the dark days of Iraq, in solemn tones predicting the end of Iraq, why Iraq must be trisected (e.g., giving the Kurds an independent country), and in general (in two books) predicting the... Read more

So, I picked up the Magnificat Year of the Priest Companion – a little book of novenas, litanies, essays and meditations on the value and meaning of the priesthood. Being a Magnificat product, it is as excellently put-together as you would expect: the illustrations are gorgeous and invite contemplation. The prayers are thoughtful and comprehensive. The meditations are little gems. Skimming through it last night, I came across a brief piece by Fr. Vincent Nagel, and it was stirring, and... Read more

UPDATE NOTICE::: This post was originally a question: “800,000 Converts from Islam?” I wrote it as a question, because it seemed like a lot to me. The answer, coming out of “Intentional Disciples” (which had been down when I was trying to research there, for I knew it to be a reasonable site with reasonable numbers on this matter) gives a more reasonable view of things. END UPDATE::: From my fellow FT’er, comes news that there are, apparently, 800,000 new... Read more

Couple weeks ago we saw some very happy nuns who were belying Bitter Maureen Dowd’s assertions. Seems there are other nuns who are happy – nay, joyful; in fact, they seem to be coming out of the woodwork. Check out these Franciscan nuns in Spain: A 43 year-old prioresses has revolutionized an old Poor Clares convent in Spain, turning it onto a magnet for dozens of young professional women. . . .Sr. Veronica joined the convent which had not seen... Read more

Had a problem with a router and we were without internets for most of the day, but we’re back up and speedy, now. Predictably, my email was all backed up, and I tried to get through it quickly, but one note made me pause, from reader Mark S., who wrote: Between Obama not bothering to show up in Germany last week . . . and neglecting to name Reagan or Thatcher (I never thought he’d mention John Paul), and then... Read more

Sent along by Pianogirl, this is pretty astounding. Make sure you hang around for the final two stunts. Truly deserves the use of that otherwise overplayed word, “amazing.” Via Read more

Okay, you guys all seem to want to talk about it, and I am really tied up elsewhere, so I’ll do something I don’t think I’ve ever done and leave an open thread – you can yell and shout about this all you want, but I ask you simply keep to the basic comment guidelines. A few links about this, if you haven’t seen them: James Taranto: Obama’s Show Trials The Boyz at HillBuzz who made an extraordinary apology to... Read more

(Little seen in April, 2009, this is a repost) I love this simple definition of grace from Dom Augustin Guillerand, O. Cart, a French Carthusian. This is the secret of peace, after committing a fault. What is past is past. And if we accept the consequences, while bracing our will, we can be sure that God will know how to draw glory even from our faults. Not to be downcast after committing a fault is one of the marks of... Read more

Mark Shea, utterly disgusted with the press, and offended by the rank “truthiness” by which they and the government prefer to run, unleashes the dogs of hell: One thing you can give our media Chattering Classes: They are utterly consistent. After Major Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire on a roomful of defenseless people in Fort Hood, it was absolutely assured that we would immediately be told that this outrage had nothing to do with his Islamic faith and that it... Read more
