On All Saints Day I linked you to a post for, well, All Saints Day, that included a video of Fr. James Martin discussing his first acquaintances with the Saints, and also his excellent book, My Life With the Saints. Fr. Jim has been a good friend to this blog for a while, even visiting here for a day-long chat, a while back. So, it’s only fitting that a fellow who is a friend of the Saints would profess his... Read more

Although my sons are done with Boy Scouts, my husband is still involved in scouting and with the Explorers program, wherein young men and women may investigate career options. One of his kids, an 18 year old boy who is in his first semester of engineering school, has been diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, which is pretty serious. In his case, the cancer has spread to the lymph within his visceral pleura. He has been told get leave school and deliver himself... Read more

Dominican Nuns having fun So many people have written so well about Maureen Dowd’s recent display of sublime ignorance on the subject of nuns and the oppressive, patriarchal church that has oppressed them and kept them down encouraged them to do and be and lead, teach, advise and build for lo these 2000 years that I really did not feel a need to comment. After all, Archbishop Timothy Dolan said it so well, in a letter to the NY Times,... Read more

Start with this story highlighted over at Hot Air: After eight years working at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Bryan, Texas, including two years as its director, Abby Johnson suddenly decided that she could no longer participate in abortions. What pushed Johnson out was both an ultrasound of an abortion and a renewed emphasis on the cash-generating business in the failing economy. After being told to deemphasize prevention and market for abortions, Johnson finally had enough… Then check out this... Read more

Over at Twitter, Kim Priestap wrote: The bad news: my 4 year old daughter has a stomach bug – again. The good news: I’m at 3600 words in NaNoWriMo. To which I replied, with great compassion: sorry about your daughter. what is nanowrimore? Ah…this sounds like fun, but not for me. I have written three or four complete novels in my life, and trashed all but one of them. Totally trashed, as in not one word still exists. I have... Read more

Obama wants Democrats to make sure they get “Cousin Pookie” off the couch and into the voting booth, tomorrow. The president is trying out a joke, obviously. They’re unamused at Hot Air, and are innocently asking who is Cousin Pookie? Obama is from Chicago, after all. Check the pet cemeteries. Make your own gravestone! Read more

UPDATE: Okay, call it FIVE amusing links, thanks to Iowahawk First up: Mark Steyn had me guffawing over my cornflakes this morning with this one: The Senior Advisor [Valerie Jarrett] seems to have forgotten that she is the power. Admittedly, this is a recurring lapse on the part of the administration. There was Barack Obama only the other day blaming everything on the president — no, no, silly, not him, the other fellow, the Designated Fall Guy who stepped down... Read more

Reposted from January ’09 Who needs the saints, what’s the point? A nicely done video by Fr. Jim Martin, author of My Life With the Saints, which has been endlessly plugged around here, and with good reason. It’s a good way to spend 3 1/2 minutes. I’ve written before about the Communion of Saints and what it is like to pray with the cloud of witnesses St. Paul tells us are always around us. Christians profess the Communion of Saints... Read more

The New York Yankees’ Nick Swisher climbed a wall to try and catch a ball in Game 1 of the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies in New York. (Elise Amendola/Associated Press) Source Vanderleun writes of that wonderful picture, above: As long as we have the World Series every Autumn, I will continue to believe to the adamantine rock bottom of my soul that God blesses America and has an exceptional plan for this nation. Look at the moment .... Read more
