Repost from 9/15/05 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined to be the rise and the fall of many in Israel, and a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.” The Gospel According to Luke, Chapter 2 Today’s gospel reading at Mass... Read more

After the huge amount of interest and commentary generated by my musings on wearing a head-covering to church, I thought I would give an update! No, I did not look this pretty So, yesterday, I went to mass and I DID obey the nagging, nudging urge I’ve had to cover my head. But I did not use the black, veil-y scarf I’d been considering. Instead, heeding all the good advice so many had left here (or emailed), I chose a... Read more

When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself. – John 12:32 I love Webster Bull’s new blog, Why I am Catholic; he’s a terrific writer who manages to convey wonder and joy in every post, and he makes me take renewed joy in being Catholic. But what I most love about the blog is that it has provided me with kind of daily spiritual spritz of windshield cleaner; now, each day, I find myself... Read more

A few months ago, during the Obama-at-Notre Dame controversy, I had a conversation with a journalist at another magazine, and opined that the whole issue of life vs. death was -and has been since the time of Moses- a contest between light and dark, and would continue to be so. The journalist said, “you just said ‘black and white,'” and teased me for being a racist. But I’d said “light and dark,” and he admitted, when he stopped laughing, that... Read more

Actually it didn’t need wild horses to drag me away from the blog, this weekend. The usual family obligations managed that, but Wild Horses can’t drag me away from this terrific recording of Susan Boyle singing the Rolling Stone’s classic. It’s goose-bump-inducingly lovely. Color me impressed. Deacon Greg says it’s the first cut from Susan Boyle’s new album. Can’t wait to hear more. Outside of Chris Daughtry’s first album, I haven’t purchased anything from artists discovered on these talent shows.... Read more

This woman is killing me. I hate her hate her hate her. I want that cake. I am famous around here for not much liking cake. I want that cake. I love milk. I love sweet milk. I love cream. I love all milk by-products. My middle name should be Leche. I could be Lizzie Leche. I hate Ree Drummond. She eats this stuff and remains thin. But, oh, My family loves Ree Drummond. This horrible woman has a cookbook... Read more

A longtime friend and blogger related feeling reluctant to write about 9/11 on this anniversary. “Everything just feels so tense and uncertain,” this person wrote, “I’m having a hard time focusing on the anniversary, and hasn’t everything that could be said about 9/11 been said?” I confessed to a similar feeling. On one hand, one wants to write, “never forget, and never again,” on the other hand, one is almost tired of feeling the pain and the anger. It’s almost... Read more

I’m totally with Julie in every respect. My husband has those damn spiraly things all over the house (not in my office or at my nightstand; I won’t have them, the lighting gives me headaches). I too am hoarding incandescent bulbs. Read more

Taking a break from the writing, (which is not going well, because it’s the first stirrings of Autumn, here in NY and I want to be outside!) I figured I’ll talk about something that’s been in my head for a while, and that is the question of whether I should cover it, while at prayer, and especially at Mass. Cover my head, I mean. I started wondering about this last winter, when I would go to Adoration and find myself... Read more
