Well, my unplanned bit of traveling ended well-enough, but I see I have an awful lot of catching up to do – lots of comments, lots of email. Please bear with me, I also have lots of catching up to do at home as well. Peace, out! Read more

Al Gore, who hasn’t been getting much attention, lately, is going to get into a few headlines by helping Quentin Tarantino promote his new film, Inglorious Basterds, in Tennessee. Lawrence Bender, producer for Quentin Tarantino’s new film, Inglourious Basterds, asked the former vice president to host a Nashville movie premiere tonight, and Gore was happy to do it, reports spokeswoman Kalee Kreider. The connection: Bender was one of the producers behind Gore’s documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Bender also attended the... Read more
Rick at Brutally Honest, for whom I have a deal of affection, and he’s been a a provocative read for years, has been away from the Catholic Church for a long time. He and his wife have now decided to partake of Holy Communion within the Catholic Church, although without the sacrament of Confession or any sort of adherent “membership,” in the church. He feels free to do this, because “no man has a right to stand between another man... Read more
Our friends, the Passionist Nuns of St. Joseph Monastery in Kentucky, (whose joy-filled tribulations we followed through last winter’s media-ignored ice storm) having recently clothed their postulant as a novice were rejoicing last week as they announced the upcoming reception of yet another young aspirant to their cloister. It was lovely to read of their new aspirant, but then reader Robert H passed along this very moving post from that convent-minded young lady, as she closed her blog to pursue... Read more
It’s just a great site full of useful, interesting (and not exclusively Catholic) headlines you’re not seeing anywhere else, although yes, it is a terrific Catholic resource, as well. Thanks to New Advent, I came across Steve Ray’s blog, and his links to these quick messages from Dove – little counter-cultural gems from a company which has made a commitment to market itself to real women, without creating unreal expectations. Bravo, Dove. Bravo, Steve. Bravo, New Advent. And, since I... Read more
Let’s look some more at this piece by Jillian Bandes, on Obama’s new “Chief Diversity Officer,” Mark Lloyd. I was a bit snarky yesterday when I wrote of this newly-created office: Does it seem to you that the Obama administration makes up titles and offices the way Bluto made up new names for Animal House Pledges? “You’ll be…the Chief Diversity Officer!” “Why?” “Why the hell not?” It certainly does seem that the Obama administration is interested in creating a million... Bear with me, please. Real life is intruding. Somehow my house has exploded or something, and there just seems to be STUFF everywhere I look. It seems like every available flat surface has too much stuff on it. There are boxes everywhere. There are two kids preparing to go back to school. There are looming appointments I knew nothing about and the possibility of sudden overnight travel. Glad I had my little retreat, but I wonder if they’ll take me... Read more

David Goldhill has done all of us a tremendous service with his 10,000 word article in The Atlantic Online. Yes, it’s long, but it’s thoughtful and true and something that really must be read. I had linked to it as an update, here, but decided that it really needs to be promoted, disseminated and discussed, and not relegated to an “update” that might be missed. Goldhill is a Democrat who looks at the healthcare not as a wonk or a... Read more
This is real art. Ukraine’s got talent…and history still fresh in memory. H/T Elder Son and here: The video tells the story of life during World War II or The Great Patriotic War, as it’s known in the Ukraine. It is no doubt the reason for the emotional reactions of some of the audience. The Ukraine was one of the most devastated countries of WWII, with 1 in 4 Ukrainians killed and nearly 20% of all people killed in the... Read more
