Over at Conversion Diary, Jennifer Fulwiler has been serving up an inspiring interview with an couple named couple named Kimberly and Jimmy, who are in the process of adopting two HIV+ children from Ethiopia. This is a remarkable three-part testimony to the life of faith, the rewards of trust and the often-neglected truth that if we simply pay attention to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, we will know precisely the way we are to go. In Part I we... Read more

The King is a Fink by Parker & Hart So, the White House is not going to give us taxpayers a timely update on the nation’s money and employment situation. They’re just gonna “hold that information back” until Congress goes into recess. They’re just gonna keep everyone in the dark until they muscle through his unpopular Healthcare legislation – that 1,000-page, unread, undebated document – that will push our deficit into unbearable territory, give the government unprecedented control over our... Read more

Newsman Walter Cronkite has passed away at age 92. I tend to echo Allahpundit’s sentiments, here. His life was long and successful, his death came at a late age we should all be so fortunate to see; I wish peace for his family, but absolutely dread another overindulgent media-waking. Particularly when the American public faces so many grave issues, the anticipation of watching the press glurge at another morbidly sentimental feast just feels exhausting. That journalists were my first heroes... Read more

These get better all the time. What is it about Couric and the way she reads news that makes her so perfectly suited to this? Great fun! Enjoy the palate cleansers! UPDATE: Last time we checked in, Carolina Cannonball only had a few submissions for her Ugly Church Art Contest. Now, she has scores of them. Take a deep breath and go check it out. There are many foul, ugly works, but I do think that the “Butcher Shop Map... Read more

I like this clip of President Obama speaking forcefully and passionately, and I think, from the heart, about teaching our children to expect more from themselves. Embedded video from CNN Video Obama is speaking to the NAACP, but his message is pertinent to all of America, where we spend a lot of time telling our children how “special” they are, but don’t re-inforce that message by allowing them to really discover their uniqueness and individual genius by offering enough daily... Read more

Another day beset with trials from this clunky, slow, old computer, and I think this may be the day (or the weekend) that Lizzie finally gets the speedy laptop she’s been craving (and saving up for). Here’s the problem. I care little for technological things; telling me something has 4567 RAM or 849375 BITS or whatever, these things mean nothing. Say those words to me and they translate into my feeble brain as “blahblahblahblahblah-ohlookakitty!-blahblahblah.” My husband and I have been... Read more

Actually, they’ve both been hanging around my tab bar for a couple of days, and they’re both brought to my attention thanks to Deacon Greg Kandra. And they’re both Must Reads: 1) “The news media, despite their claims of impartiality, and despite the good work they often do accomplish, are just as prone to prejudice, ignorance, bad craftsmanship and tribalism as any other profession. But unlike other professions, the press has constitutional protections. It also has real power in shaping... Read more

President Obama’s plans are to appoint 32 Czars within his administration. These are people about whom Congress does not advise or consent, and about whom the press is conveniently incurious. So far, the press thinks they’re all just brilliant and they have no problem with a president appointing 32 Czars accountable only to him. Whadda you think of that? You comfortable knowing that these “czars” escape serious but are given some rather potent power with little oversight? I mean, come... Read more

Some interesting pieces and subjects that I have been too busy to post on this week, but really wanted to share with you: Fr. James Martin – author of one of the best Catholic autobiographical books in the last 50 years and a longtime friend of this blog – is in many ways the perfect go-to voice of “reasonable, palatable Catholicism” for many in the media (and he is a very genial, bright and exceedingly reasonable, fair-minded fellow). At big... Read more
