It’s freezing here; we can’t swim, can’t have the windows open. Every day is cold. It just convinces me more than ever that solar flares (or the lack of them) have more to do with the ever-changing climate of planet earth. And more resentful of policies, programs and restrictions put in our way, in service to the hoo-hah of Mr. Gore. And why this ticks me off, too. And this. And why not, anymore? I am most seriously unhappy today.... Read more

Very interesting story out of media bistro. When BayNewser heard that someone from the State Department had called Twitter to ask them to delay maintenance to allow Iranians to continue tweeting, we pictured some fusty old guy at Foggy Bottom in a rumpled Brooks Brothers suit and wayward spectacles. Imagine our surprise, then, when we learned that, instead, it was a 27-year-old whiz kid whose job is to advise the State Department on how to use social media to promote... Read more

Ed Morrissey of Hot Air suggested that I put out a feeler and see if some folks would like to get emailed for a headsup whenever I do a podcast. Is that something you would like? Let me know. Also, I am considering recording the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and some Litanies. Interested or would it be a waste of time? Would you like an occasional podcast of the Office of Readings? Or mid-day prayer? New readers – do you... Read more

Confederate Yankee has some fun giving a smackdown to Drudge for accusing the White House of faking their garden. I am not entirely sure that’s what Drudge is doing. He calls it a “miracle grow” but I don’t know that he isn’t simply having fun with words. In any event, both Bob and Terresa at Noisy Room are quickly denouncing any suggestion of a “veggie-gate” which I think is wise. With some Sarah Palin supporters still protesting David Letterman, after... Read more

Via Julie at Happy Catholic, some bad news about Patrick O’ Hannigan and his daughter*: Jane and I were in a serious car accident yesterday morning. Thomas (son) and Cathleen (wife) were not with us at the time. I sustained only bruising and some deep lacerations to my left elbow, so I was discharged from the emergency room late yesterday afternoon. Jane was ejected from my vehicle and suffered head trauma. She is still in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.... Read more

In 8 years of Bill Clinton’s presidency, I dreamed about the man once, and it don’t remember feeling good or bad about it. In 8 years of Bush’s presidency, I may have dreamed of him once. I think I did, but don’t really remember. I know it is not unusual for people to dream of prominent folks in the news, particularly if they are being barraged with images, soundbites, headlines. For instance, back when he was (and not the AMA)... Read more

Emily Dickinson wrote: Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune–without the words And never stops at all… How appropriate then, that the communications tool most responsible for keeping hope alive in shattered Iran is “a thing” called “Twitter,” and that the 140-character dispatches being sent and received by people in desperate straits are called “tweets.” People are “tweeting” for their lives, and their messages are bold, frightened, determined and unbelievably moving. Students... Read more

As I explain in the podcast, after turning alternative media for lack of MSM coverage, and reading tons of material on Iran, and listening to the president’s remarks, and reading Twittered Tweets from people in Iran trying to get information and images out of that country, I was already inclined to pray for the people of Iran. Then, after seeing a few horrific videos, and one awful picture (very graphic, you are warned), I have decided to pray the Office... Read more

I was going to hang on to this piece and save it for an upcoming post on Vocations, but I was so charmed by the sisters being interviewed, here, that I am going to do a “little” Vocations piece, today. This is H/T Deacon Greg: “The [Monastic Dominican Nuns] didn’t want to come to Hollywood,” Sister Mary Pia says with a smile. “That was the funny thing. They didn’t want any kind of worldly association.” But as it turned out,... Read more
