An Orthodox Hermit says it all, and it’s very humbling to hear. H/T Reader Dick I have to get quieter. I have so far to go. He says: “without purity one cannot approach holiness…” I am sure he means purity of body and mind and spirit. I have far to go. This young one has wisely started early. Her story is here, here, here and here It is Vocation awareness week: How to encourage vocations More. And more. In the... Read more

Panetta, Rendition;, who knew? Hitchens on Lincoln; always worth reading, even if Newsweek isn’t. Hey, Juden: don’t fly that flag… It’s the oldest hate. But that doesn’t make it the smartest! Calvinist in Calvin Klein?: Pastor James Dean! Maureen Dowd: 14 years old Bono: Taking writing work away from actual writers? Maybe, but he’s a better writer than Dowd, hands down. Faith in freedom and people: Reminds me of a line spoken by Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, but are... Read more

Quiet today. After gabbing and watching videos through the night, we put Buster on a plane headed back to school early this morning, then went to mass and – since it was offered – took the opportunity to go to confession, and then came home and promptly fell asleep until the early afternoon. Can’t remember the last time I’ve done that. Felt kind of good, actually! So, here is a link around to stuff you may or may not be... Read more

Richard John Neuhaus, 1936-2009 First Things announces his death and reprints an old, relevant, and quite brilliant piece of his, on the subject of death. It was a couple of days after leaving intensive care, and it was night. I could hear patients in adjoining rooms moaning and mumbling and occasionally calling out; the surrounding medical machines were pumping and sucking and bleeping as usual. Then, all of a sudden, I was jerked into an utterly lucid state of awareness.... Read more

Noonan – October 2005 A few weeks ago I was reading Christopher Lawford’s lovely, candid and affectionate remembrance of growing up in a particular time and place with a particular family, the Kennedys, circa roughly 1950-2000. It’s called “Symptoms of Withdrawal.” At the end he quotes his Uncle Teddy. Christopher, Ted Kennedy and a few family members had gathered one night and were having a drink in Mr. Lawford’s mother’s apartment in Manhattan. Teddy was expansive. If he hadn’t gone... Read more

Personally a difficult day over here for some family members who are crucible-stepping. If you could keep J and P in your prayers, I would really appreciate it. Meanwhile, there’s plenty to read! Big Doings: for the launch of Big Hollywood. I like the Steyn quote highlighted by Ed Driscoll he’s right!. And Driscoll is correct that editor John Nolte will keep the site provocative, smart and funny. I like the site a lot – it’s quickly going to become... Read more

I hadn’t realized it but voting opened today for the 2008 Weblog Awards, and you can vote for all of your favorite blogs here. (My li’l old category is here, if you’d like to vote for me!) Who am I voting for? Well, I have my favorites, but so many of them are nominated, that I’ll be splitting many of my votes throughout the days (you can vote once per day in each category). Okay, I am a sucker for colorful, interactive things – I like my Rosetta Stone stuff, too – but this is a little different. If you look to the right sidebar there is a new ad there, for ScriptureDirect.com, that offers a 15 day free trial. Tonight I signed up for it, just to check it out, and I likee. ScriptureDirect.com is a useful tool for religion teachers, preachers, discussion group facilitators and those interested in studying the New Testament... Read more

A reader writes to say she is at her father’s deathbed and he will soon be gone. While he has been ill for over a year, the whole family feels very blessed that they have had time together, and the opportunity to walk with each other through a journey of terrible beauty. Please pray for DMD’s father and her family. In paradisum deducant te Angeli; in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres, et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Ierusalem. Chorus angelorum... Read more
