I’ve heard back from a few of the monastics featured in This Christmas Shopping Post, and they’re all expressing gratitude for your purchases. The Benedictine Sisters in Oregon, makers of the delectable and insanely delicious Monastery Mustard have written: “we’ve never had so many orders!” I just made salmon coated with their Devoutly Dill mustard last night; it was moist and yummy and we ate every scrap! The Hallelujah Jalepeno is still my absolute fave, though. That’s the stuff. Also,... Read more

This struck me, for no particular reason beyond the language, but I thought I’d post: …Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh; such is the deceitful one and the antichrist. Look to yourselves that you do not lose what we worked for but may receive a full recompense. Anyone who is so “progressive” as not to remain in the teaching of the Christ does not have God;... Read more

I was helping someone find a quote about American Presidents, and in the process of searching, we found these from my own site. Thought as we ponder our latest election and the question of what the presidency means and where it might lead, I’d toss ’em out to you. But sticking to Clinton, and to the value of the American Presidency – it is worth noting. We are too enthralled with our partisanships and our “hates”, sometimes, and we overlook... Read more

Sorry so quiet. This post was supposed to show up at 7AM, but I screwed up the publication time. Would appreciate any prayers in our direction. DH went for his stress test today (I tagged along, of course) and the doctor’s initial impression was very positive. DH brought himself up to a 99% level with no pain and the doctor said, “from what I can see, all good,” but he said we’d have the full report tomorrow. So…we’ll know more... Read more

I’ve written almost nothing about politics since the election because there was so much noise out there in the days following it that I thought it best to step back, reflect, process and pray. One thing I’ve come to realize is that the instant busyness of the right – the call to “win in 2010, win in 2012” – before election day was even over, was off-putting to me. I think if you’re too busy scurrying and too busy moving... Read more

I know, it’s frivolous! The whole world is “in turmoil” and disaster looms on every corner. But after being sick for three weeks and now all these concerns about my husband, I find frivolity is in order, and besides, you know you’re wondering what to buy people for Christmas – how to gift people in the spirit of the season without breaking the budget. I am here to help! This year my husband and I will be shopping mostly online,... Read more

Spent all of today in the company of nurses, cardiologists, and so forth with my dear husband, who had mild-but-persistent chest pains over the weekend. They had “mostly” abated by this morning, and he was preparing to travel, but I couldn’t see my way to letting him get on a plane with chest pain “mostly” gone, and insisted that we get things checked out. Things are less conclusive than we’d like – not a heart attack, thankfully, but whether he’s... Read more

Reposted from October 2007. BUSH, CUBA & THE LIVES OF OTHERS Jay Nordlinger’s column is one of the few places I’ve seen extensive coverage of President Bush’s little-mentioned, must read speech in which he dares to talk plainly about the much distorted realities of Cuba and communism. Says Bush: Cuba’s rulers promised individual liberty. Instead they denied their citizens basic rights that the free world takes for granted. In Cuba it is illegal to change jobs, to change houses, to... Read more

Three weeks of coughing up both lungs, my appendix, uterus and part of the intestines has pulled me a bit. Was wiped out and stayed offline and in bed with a Terry Pratchett novel – but good as it was, I still kept falling asleep. Blogging will be lightish for the weekend, but please check back. I do think I’ll have a recipe or two to place up there, and now that the election’s over with (Praise God), there are... Read more

Some must reads for today – Updated, scroll down for new: You know who you are: But I don’t. Two people have generously donated to the site and left me no way to send a personal thank you. Please know I appreciate it more than I can express. You help keep the site running. H/T Lynda: NY Times suddenly discovers “nuance” in Gitmo issues that used to be all about Bushhitler. That didn’t take long. Watch the double-standards begin to... Read more
